10 YouTube Videos to Inspire Your Weekend: A List

In celebration of the coming weekend, here are 10 YouTube videos that will brighten your day, melt your heart and possibly inspire you to be the star of your own drop-dead fabulous drag show (see # 7).

Some are classics in the YouTube canon that you may already be familiar with. All are worth watching.

If it is inevitable that the media machine will always cash in on cynicism, violence and ugly celebrity behavior, perhaps it’s up to ordinary citizens as you and I to help make happiness an unstoppable, viral force that infects everyone in the form of happy YouTube videos that incude but are not limited to: Corgi puppies, beautiful public art and extraordinary heroes that make our own minor grievances seem completely managable.

And unlike therapy sessions or Facebook gifts, happy YouTube videos are completely free.

1. Christian the Lion reunion

Two men raise a lion cub on their church grounds and name him Christian. When the lion gets too big, its human owners has no choice but to release it into the wild where it belongs. A year later, the two owners decide to search for Christian in the African jungle, despite being warned that Christian will probably not recognize them. Of course, this video proves the naysayers completely wrong.

2. Where the Hell is Matt?

42 shots of 42 different countries and thousands of people from all over the world, all interconnected by one man doing a solo dance that can be best described as a dorky hybrid of the chicken dance and the running man. An ambassador of global peace–or one wanderlusting dude who simply likes to dance? You decide.

3. Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture on Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

Carnegie Melon professor Randy Pausch passed away last July of pancreatic cancer. He will forever be immortalized by his last lecture in McConomy Auditorium before a packed audience on achieving your childhood dreams.

4. Jason McElwain’s Basketball Game

I am humbled by the outpouring of support that goes to this autistic basketball player who has a chance to participate in his high school’s basketball game.

5. Corgi Dog

Use this heartwarming video as a weapon to distract any friends, lovers or family members who may be upset with you.

6. Two Otters Holding Hands

(See instructions for #5)

7. The Most Amazing Lip-Synch Performance Ever

Need to add some spice in your life outlook? Take a cue from this fierce drag queen in Wonder Woman gear–it’s all in the entrance, baby.

8. Her Morning Elegance Music Video

Oh why, oh why does this cleverly stop-action animated music video with two live actors and a bed make me so happy and sad at the same time?

9. Japanese Graffiti Art

A wall of beautiful street art by Japanese graffiti artists is created–then destroyed–then created–then destroyed again, all within the span of one week. A highly creative street art experiment somehow becomes a deep meditation on the circular nature of life and death.

10. Drumroll, please…

So help me out, guys. I’m not as well-versed in the YouTube Youniverse as much as many of you are. What belongs in the number 10 slot? Don’t be selfish and hoard all those YouTube gems to yourself! Post some links in the comments, and keep the happy momentum going!
