5 “Deep” Books To Awaken You…

It is paradoxical:  No matter how many books you read about awakening, you won’t experience awakened consciousness using the part of your mind that’s doing the reading!

Some of the best books I’ve read on Awakening help the reader get beyond the "self" and integrate aspects of that expanded consciousness into a new life, that’s no longer all about the "self".

Here are 5 of my favorites:

1.  Integral Life Practice - Ken Wilber, Terry Patten, Adam Leonard and Marco Morelli

This is a 21st Century "how to" book for physical health, emotional balance, mental clarity and spiritual awakening.  There is incredible depth here.  Simple yet sophisticated exercises are included throughout (many take just several minutes).

2.  The Second Book Of The Tao – Stephen Mitchell

This is a cool book!  Ultra zen-style:  Short adaptations of Chinese texts with Mitchell’s commentary on the opposite pages.  Every entry is deep, deep, deep!

3.  The Biology of Transcendence – Joseph Chilton-Pearce

This book explores the inner-workings of the body and mind, touring the brain structures and how they develop to allow more evolved consciousness to unfold.  It also delves into what goes wrong and the role of culture in our evolution as human beings.

4.  Bring Me The Rhinoceros – John Tarrant

This is a small book of traditional Zen Koans, which in the words of the author are "partly paradoxical questions dangerous to your beliefs and partly treasure boxes of ancient wisdom".   Another deep book.

5.  Healing Myths, Healing Magic – Donald Epstein

This book dispels the many cultural myths that interfere with our growth and healing like: "Healing means becoming more balanced, comfortable and in control of my experience."

Happy exploration!
