Researchers continue to identify new physical and emotional benefits from exercise, but if we approach our exercise routine with dread or despair, how long will we keep that routine going? Here are five ways to make an exercise routine more fun:
- Check your inner critic at the door. Your personal exercise time is dedicated to yourself and your own health; it’s not an opportunity for your inner critic to run wild with self-accusations of your being too slow or too anything. Tell your inner critic to hush!
- Exercise with a friend or family member. As human beings, we usually prefer to be with someone else than to be alone. An exercise buddy can help keep you accountable to your exercise times and make the whole experience a lot more fun!

- Avoid types of exercise that you hate. Your body doesn’t need the dreaded Stairmaster to get a good workout; you can join a spinning class, try a yoga class, play in an indoor pool, or whatever is fun for you. You don’t need to spend a dime, either – just go outside and play Frisbee or football (or even tag!), jump rope, go roller blading, go sledding, or any activity that gets your heart rate up.
- Watch your favorite show while working out. If you’re working out at home on a stationary bike, treadmill, or other exercise equipment, record your favorite shows and then watch them while you’re working out. You could even decide to only watch TV while working out at the same time.
- Get a dog! Going for walks, throwing a Frisbee or ball, swimming, running through the snow or sand, and pretty much any other outdoor activity can be more joyful when a beloved, tail-wagging dog is enthusiastically joining in.
You’ll probably drop out of an aerobics class if you view it as “a series of strenuous exercises which help convert fats, sugars, and starches into aches, pains, and cramps.” Find a more fun way to reap the benefits of exercise!

Oh my god, why have I not thought of #4!! I only recently started lifting weights at home thanks to my friend who is super experienced with weight training–and that will be the perfect time for me to indulge in my junky reality TV shows online while busting my biceps.
Can't wait to exercise now!!
Outstanding — thanks Yumi!!
I have never been a conventional exerciser. I agree with you, Dr. Deb — make it fun. Thanks!

I'm right there with you, Pamela — thanks!!
