Applying Musical Terms in Our Life to Create Expansion- Part 1

guitar

Music is a universal language. There are things music can communicate in just a few notes that would take a lifetime to communicate in words.  When we hear something harmonious in a musical piece it can bring feelings of elation, elevation, love, peace, joy and can touch our emotions in so many ways.  On the other end of the spectrum, when dissonance in a musical piece is present it can create feelings of uneasiness, anxiousness, fear and contracting feelings… Dissonance, in small doses, has a role in music and our life.  I am sure we have all experienced the music of a chase scene in a film that tap into this theory.  So how can we use harmony and dissonance to create expansion in our lives?  Let’s Explore!

Harmony

Dissonance

So, what is Dissonance?  According to www.dictionary.reference.com:

dis·so·nance

2. Music ..
a) simultaneous combination of tones conventionally accepted as being in a state of unrest and needing completion.

3. Disagreement or incongruity.

In reading these definitions did it bring to mind different areas of your life that are in harmony and others that are in dissonance?

Let us move through a three-step process together:

  1. Identifying one part of your life that feels dissonant
  2. Resolving and managing the dissonance in this area
  3. Attuning to bring in Harmony in this area

1-Identifying

If we take the time to identify our dissonant energetic patterns we can begin to see why we are so tired at the end of the day or why we lack excitement and passion in our lives.

Just as if we were overhauling our business to see why we lost money this quarter, we can overhaul how we spend our energy and create an energetic budget that releases some of the dissonance and moves us towards harmony.  The first step is identifying how dissonance in our life can drain your energy.  So, is there a person, place, situation or energy in your life right now that is creating a disagreement, is unresolved, in a stare of unrest or needing completion?  Write down what it is and any other thoughts or feelings that come to mind when identifying

2- Releasing, Resolving and Managing

As you identified the dissonance within your life did you notice a particular story or belief system that is keeping you in that dissonance?  It is easy to project the “usual” outcome for the person, place, situation or energy that we imagine.  Let’s shift that story.

Begin by asking “What Can I do to resolve, release or manage this dissonance”?

a) Awareness– Identifying the problem allows us to move out of limbo and being aware empowers us to spend our energy more effectively

b) Creating boundaries- when we are unable to release the situation or energy entirely due to obligation, commitment or other reasons we can set a boundary with it.  How much time are you spending in the situation or thinking about it?  Is it possible to limit this interaction?  Give yourself energetic budgets…you are spending way too much time in the situation…don’t head for emotional bankruptcy!

c) Releasing the situation– Sometimes we just have to clean our garden.  If there is a weed, maybe it’s time to get rid of it.  Our lives are sacred; do not sacrifice the garden of your life to please the weeds.

3-Attuning to bring Harmony

As we begin to resolve and manage the dissonance in our live we begin to make room for creating a more harmonious way of being.  As you see in the definition of harmony,

harmony is the science of the structure, relations, and practical combination of chords.

Harmony can be a way to prevent relationships moving into dissonance.  Although we don’t have to necessarily agree in every situation is it possible that we can bring a new point of view that harmonizes with the other person to co-create growth in the situation?

When we become aware that dissonance is coming into a situation we can ask ourselves,

“What can I do to create Harmony in this situation’?  Maybe there is a third way of doing things outside your way or the other person’s way.  This is the essence of harmony, creating a new chord together that was neither your note or the other person’s but a combination of both and a new note.  The chord is a co-creation that moved beyond what either of you could have created individually! As defined above: a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts; congruity.

Be in gratitude for the dissonance that existed, for the awareness of it can assist in bringing relationships and challenging situations into new unchartered and harmonious outcomes.

Our lives are too short to be humming in the dissonant energies of unresolved issues.  Expand your life into harmony and tap into the song of your heart!
