Art as life. Or “The playing card flies at one hundred and eight miles per hour and penetrates the apple”

Earlier this year, 2010, I contributed some text towards two arts projects which took place in London {details further below]. The authors of these projects are not known to each other – however there is of the Sufi spirit of openness, acceptance and exploration in each.

I would like to share a part of my really quite modest (though elliptical!) intervention, which is as follows.

the playing card flies at one hundred and eight miles an hour and penetrates the apple

art is a trace of the human spirit, revealing and manifesting its processes, histories, possibilities and animus.
art reflects life’s indeterminacy, its liminality.
art engages and captures despite sometimes feeling unintelligible and meaningless.
art like life can either have no role or else is its own justification.
eight of clubs.
