The current statistics for childhood obesity are shocking. 2 out of 3 children in America are already at risk for being overweight or obese. We can sit and point fingers at a number of factors–unhealthy school lunches, reduced physical education class time, the overall proliferation of a sedentary lifestyle due to computers, video games and cell phone games, and so on.
One very sobering truth certainly does not change: all of us need to do something to fix this problem. The national childhood obesity epidemic did not suddenly appear out of nowhere from a social vacuum; clearly, we adults (with 1 out of 3 of us already overweight or obese) need to do something drastically different from what we have been doing so that the children in our communities are following better examples and practicing better health.
This week, our Intent Voice bloggers responded with a great number of insightful articles on how to address this problem. When we are healthy and educated, then our children have a fighting chance of being healthy and educated, too.
