Ten years ago I heard the words every woman dreads. "You have Breast Cancer." Three days before my thrity-ninth birthday I became a member of a unique group. One in eight women hear this diagnosis in their lifetime. When I received this diagnosis I was working towards my MBA, raising my nine year old son and caring for my aging Mother. I did not have time for Breast Cancer! On this, the eve of my tenth anniversary of survival I find myself taking stock of this profound journey.
Fear, uncertainity and loss were felt at levels I have yet to experience since. Chemotherapy, surgery and radiation took pieces of me along the way. My hair, energy and self-determination were causalities of this journey. However, out of this loss came blessings that stay with me today. Strength, committment of family and friends, increased faith in my Creator and love for myself. I really didn’t have time for Breast Cancer but, I am grateful for the blessings this journey brought me. I am honored to stand among those that have survived and lend my voice to the call for further research for a definitive cure.
Take care of yourself and the women you love. Know the signs/symptoms of Breast Cancer and by all means be vigilant with screening examinations such as: mammograms, self-breast exam and PAP Smears. Remember, should you become one in eight women to hear this diagnosis this is not unto death. Breast Cancer is serious but it can be treated. You will survive and thrive. Love and Light to you all.
