Keeping the air inside your house fresh is important. It makes breathing easier and just feels better to live in an environment that is fresh and clean. However, it can be difficult to do, especially during stale, dry winter months. Follow these five easy tips to keep everything crisp and clean:
Open the Windows Even if it’s chilly outside, if the weather permits it, throw open the windows on a sunny afternoon. You might have to wear a sweater, but the sun will prevent things from getting too cold inside. Hopefully you’ll catch a breeze, and the air moving through the house will help to clean out stale odors. If possible, it’s best to open windows on opposite sides of the home, in order to allow air to move through the house. If you’re in a cold weather region, don’t forget to turn off the heat while the windows are open and turn it back on again when you close them.
Change Your Air Filter Do you remember the last time you changed your furnace air filter? Since it’s often hidden away in the basement, it can be easy to forget. However, running the air inside your house through a dirty filter will compromise the freshness of the air. Consider having air filters delivered directly to your home on a regular basis. When the new filters show up at your door, you’ll know that it’s time to swap out the old filter for a new one.
Bake Something In order to make your house smell much sweeter, turn on the oven and spend an afternoon baking. The delicious smells of your cookies, cakes or muffins coming from the oven will permeate the house. No time to bake? Put a pot of water on the stove and throw in some cinnamon sticks and apple peels. Bring the water to a simmer and keep an eye on it – you don’t want all of the water to boil off. While it’s simmering, the apple cinnamon scent will spread throughout the house – it will smell just like you have an apple pie in the oven!
Get Cleaning Winter is a great time to dedicate a few hours to deep cleaning your house. Move the furniture in your bedroom so that you can vacuum under it, take the drawers out of the fridge so that you can wipe them down, and spend some time mopping tile floors. You might even want to consider calling in a carpet cleaner to provide a deep carpet cleaning. Getting rid of as much dust and grime as possible from the surfaces in your house will make everything seem much fresher.
Use a Room Spray Consider purchasing a product that is specifically designed to either remove odors from your house or to mask them with something that smells much better. These products are relatively inexpensive and do a great job of freshening things up inside. One that we’ve found works well is Febreze Air Effects Air Refresher. It eliminates odors from the air, leaving you with a crisp and clean scent instead.
Purchase an Air Purifier The filter inside an air purifier is even better than the one inside your furnace. If you have problems with allergies or asthma, it might be worth it to invest in one of these units. If you keep it running and change the filter regularly, it will significantly improve the quality of the air in your home. Whole house units can be purchased as well, but are significantly more expensive.
