I was reading An Ascension Handbook by Tony Stubbs, and found some information that really meshed with my understanding of Reiki and how it works. What follows is a chat I had with a friend as I explained it to him.
artfulliving04: I’m reading some cool stuff about chakras…We have three energy fields (physical, emotional and mental) that resonate at different frequencies bands, and the chakras are frequency transfomers that translate the energy in the field that is excited into frequencies that turn the other fields on. If you are in alignment, you respond quickly. If you’re out of alignment, you become confused – for example, if your survival was threatened, the first chakra would pick up the thought of danger or the feeling of anger, and it would broadcast DANGER! through the other fields. Your mental body might think, "I’ll talk him out of it." while your emotional body feels, "I remember this from when I was little." and your physical body says, "Run for it!"
dreams: thats super cool though so it handles fight or flight….
artfulliving04: Yeah, but that was just one example. This system handles everything. Each field carries or supports energy of particular frequencies in standing waves and acts as both transmitter and receiver. The blend of frequencies and relative amplitudes is uniquely you. It’s your energy signature. The energy of the tree bodies interact in complex ways. Your thoughts affect your physical and emotional fields, and your emotions affect your thoughts and physical body.

artfulliving04: yep. our set of fields resonates with the fields of other people around us and with the planet-wide fields of consensus reality.
dreams: thats pretty neat i always thought it worked along those lines and that other dimensions are just other frequencies.
artfulliving04: me, too.
artfulliving04: the next part relates to reiki as i understand it…
artfulliving04: Suppose one day you’re out walking around town, feeling good, positive, confident, free of fear and in love with the world…
dreams: kk….
artfulliving04: You meet an old friend who’s just been fired and is worried and angry. Your friend’s emotional body is transmitting fear and his mental body is transmitting negative thoughtforms, and your fields are picking them up.
artfulliving04: Any fear frequency in you starts to hum, and a standing wave may begin to build.
dreams: hmmm….
dreams: feedback?….
artfulliving04: WAit. You are also transmitting into your friend’s field .
dreams: k….
artfulliving04: And maybe some of your "higher" frequency energy begins to resonate with him.
artfulliving04: and there it is. that’s what a reiki treatment is all about in my opinion. i stay aware and don’t let someone else’s resonance creep up on me. meanwhile, i am resonating with the reiki vibe of love and compassion, and the client has an opportunity to resonate with that also by being in my presence.
artfulliving04: there are tricks for detecting standing waves in others and shielding yourself from their effects.
dreams: so you channel the good to them and block out theirs…
artfulliving04: a person in fear can’t sense the energy of love within their fields. i give them a jump start by channeling it at them, and the outpouring of love from me prevents their fear from entering my fields. actually, no tricks are usually needed during a treatment, just awareness, but they do come in handy on some occasions.

From my training in health care the "fight or flight" response is familiar to me. The other things you describe not so much, but intuitively understood.
I would like to add that on certain days I can sense that the energies in the area of traffic and transportation are not optimal. To say the least. I become super sensitive to that and then often am able to anticipate others' not so safe or unexpected movements. It has saved me from accidents or near accidents many times.
What if I may ask: is a "lightworker". I could Google it, but I would like to hear it in your words.

Irena asked what is a lightworker – lightworkers, angelical beings of light, ascended masters, channels, reiki healers, oracles, etc. are individuals, through using various Spiritual disciplines, that have achieved unity consciousness with the divine, thus activating or tapping into the divine energies, frequencies, harmonic resonances and vibrations, channeling these energies to become healers and lightworkers of the world.
When one reaches unity consciousness, spiritual energies, psychic energies and healing energies are gift from the divine to use serving the Soul's purpose.

Yes- all that is required to assist another person into their well being is being the hollowbone that spirit moves through. It's the hardest thing a energy practitioner has to learn, to get out of their own way. Turn off all thought and emotions because the chemicals that are created from them send strong vibrations out into the universe, casuing attraction to occur.
One of the reasons why Nw Earth Reiki was birthed into being was so that higher frequency vibrations could be passed along, to hold the energy field in coherance, clear out any lower vibes that are blocking progress, and return all pieces of lost self. Many new reiki frequencies are able to come through now, due to the raising clarity of vibration of earth.
