Confusion About Concentrating in Meditation

Question:

I intend to practice meditation but I couldn’t concentrate. Please guide me how to practice for the meditation to achieve best results?

Answer:

A simple meditation you can do if you don’t have access to a qualified instructor is to practice breath awareness meditation. Sit  comfortably with the eyes closed, and let your attention be with your in breath and your out breath. Then after a moment or so, silently think the sound “so” with the inhalation and the sound “hum” with the exhalation. Don’t force the mind to stay with the breath and the sounds, it should be easy, comfortable and relaxed. Your aim is not to concentrate, but to give it an opportunity to let go and transcend thought altogether and experience its true nature. When your mind wanders, (and it will) don’t worry, just gently return your attention to the breath. Don’t feel bad about having distracting thoughts, thoughts are not bad, they are a necessary part of the mind and body settling down and then clearing old conditioning and then settling back down again. That is the basic cycle of correct meditation.

It works, the key is not to judge yourself or the experience in any way whatsoever. As soon as you realize that you're thinking then you can go back to the excersize and it will soon "feel" like you've meditated. It takes practice, definitely.

The easiest most effective meditation I know of is Transcendental Meditation (TM). It's been around for decades, is safe, really easy to learn and do. You will need to learn it from a certified TM Instructor, you should have no problem finding one. This is necessary because there are definite instructions to follow in order to practice TM, but it's very easy. It involves being given a meaningless mantra, which can only be given by a TM instructor. He or she can explain the importance of the mantra being meaningless. It's important that you get an authentic mantra that is "right" for YOU. TM is the most researched form of meditation, and is very effective in giving you very deep rest, a restful alertness. There is absolutely no strain or effort involved, you only need the right instruction to learn. There is a fee involved, but the benefits you'll get throughout your lifetime more than justify the cost. Don't be fooled by claims that state the same results can be achieve by "mimicking" the TM technique. TM gives you an authentic method that allows you to EASILY arrive at a state of Pure Awareness, beyond the subtlest thought. For more info contact a TM center near you.
