Create a Stress-Free Zone

Ideally, the stress-free space should be an area that is generally quiet, and feels good—like a bedroom or office, or even a walk-in closet or bathroom. If there are no available spaces in the quiet parts of the home, the next best choice is a favorite spot elsewhere.

A chair or meditation cushion, table for a few treasures, blanket, light.

Natural light vs. lamp makes no difference. That the space is comfortable, feels good and secure is all that matters.

Numerous studies have proven that the colors red, orange and yellow raise blood pressure, are expansive and outgoing. Conversely, the colors blue, indigo and violet decrease blood pressure, are cool and soothing. (Green is considered neutral.) Surround yourself with the cool colors for de-stressing.

You may want to begin with clearing the energy in the space by smudging, which is a Native American ritual. Herbs such as sage, sweet grass and cedar are generally used and can be found online, at natural food stores and new age bookstores. Light the end of the smudge stick and allow the smoke to clarify the air and you. Think about how the smoke to gently calming you and your space.

What to do in your space

Experiment and see what feels best to you.

·         Listen to soothing music—search “New Age Music” online or at a music store for a wide variety of soothing music

·         Meditate to soothing music. See “New Age Music for CDs to guide you

·         Scents: lavender is the winner for relaxation!

o   If you choose to add a scent, use only natural, non-toxic products in the space, because chemicals in the environment do not de-stress.
o   Candles: choose only soy, palm or beeswax not paraffin (paraffin is petroleum-based and pollutes the environment)
o   Natural incense
o   Natural essential oils for aromatherapy

·         Books: Nice time to read inspirational books or to write in a journal

·         Take a nap: Studies show that a nap increases productivity

·         Take a bath: A relaxing soak in the tub. Use only natural products like Dead Sea salts, Epsom salts, jojoba oil, essential oils.
