Daily Routine (Dinacharya)

Ayurveda recommends the below daily routine to maintain a youthful body and a clear mind.  Even if you are not able to maintain this routine every day, you can do the activities that bring you the most benefit, or focus on the full routine on the weekends, during times of stress or sickness, or during seasonal cleanses.

Morning:
  • Arise early in the morning.
  • Drink a large glass of warm water.
  • Wash your face.
  • Scrape your tongue with tongue scraper (stimulates digestion and elimination).
  • Brush your teeth. (We like the Red Tooth Powder).
  • Evacuate bowels and bladder.
  • Do 10-15 minutes of morning yoga and/or 15-30 minute brisk walk or exercise with nasal breath.
  • 5-10 minutes of breathing exercise (pranayama).
  • 5-15 minute meditation or sit in silence.
  • Shower or bathe.
  • Enjoy your daily abhyanga (oil self-massage).
  • Breakfast (recommended but optional) according to body type. Do not snack before lunch.
Midday:
  • Lunch: relax and make it the largest meal of the day. Do not snack until dinner.
  • Brief rest on left side and light walking (10 to 15 minutes) after lunch
Evening:
  • Supper: the lighter and earlier the better.
  • Evening yoga, breathing exercise and meditation.
  • Go to bed by 10pm.
