Don’t Judge Yourself Too Harshly; Just Showing Up Is Courageous

It’s easy to criticize ourselves in any situation for not doing enough, not saying the right thing, not making the right choices, and so forth. It’s easy to forget that we showed courage just by showing up.

There’s courage in just showing up for the medical or dental appointment that you really don’t want to attend.

There’s courage in just showing up at the office, keeping the job that feeds your family right now, when you’re secretly hunting for a better career opportunity.

There’s courage in just getting behind the wheel of a car and driving a morning commute on highways marked by congestion, road rage, reckless driving, and other hazards.

There’s courage in just walking out in front of an audience to deliver a presentation, lecture, workshop, or performance.

There’s courage in just showing up for a difficult meeting or conversation.

As Woody Allen said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” As we begin a new week, may you dismiss harsh, self-critical thoughts and honor the courage that you display regularly – just by showing up!
