Drink To Your Health: Wine Now Associated With Better Cognitive Function

Winos rejoice! Our beloved grape juice has been proven to have yet another health benefit: better cognitive function. From a recent study in Norway that researched the effects of wine on over 5,000 men and women over the course of seven years.

Among women, there was a lower risk of a poor testing score for those who consumed wine at least 4 or more times over two weeks in comparison with those who drink < 1 time during this period The expected associations between other risk factors for poor cognitive functioning were seen, i.e. lower testing scores among people who were older, less educated, smokers, and those with depression, diabetes, or hypertension.

It has long been known that "moderate people do moderate things." The authors state the same thing: "A positive effect of wine . . . could also be due to confounders such as socio-economic status and more favourable dietary and other lifestyle habits.

The authors also reported that not drinking was associated with significantly lower cognitive performance in women. As noted by the authors, in any observational study there is the possibility of other lifestyle habits affecting cognitive function, and the present study was not able to adjust for certain ones (such as diet, income, or profession) but did adjust for age, education, weight, depression, and cardiovascular disease as its major risk factors.

So, what does this mean?

Well, it means your Cabernet is helping you fight off Alzheimer’s and dementia, that’s what!

Although both red and white wine are good for you, red wine is better for your health because of the fermentation of its skins. The skin has basically all "the good stuff" for you, such as the antioxidants flavonoids & nonflavonoids, polyphenols and resveratrol. The best wines to drink to get all this "good stuff" is red wine grown in colder climates, where the skin is thicker and full of more nutrients to protect the grape from the weather.

So, what are some of the other things all this "good stuff" does for your health?

Check it out! Red wine has been proven to….

  • Help fight against cancers including skin, breast and prostate cancers
  • Reduce the risk of heart attacks and heart disease
  • Reduce high blood pressure
  • Reduce kidney stone formations
  • Reduce blood clotting
  • Boost good cholesterol
  • Prevent cellular damage in the entire body
  • Prevent atherosclerosis, the hardening of arteries

Now, now, don’t go buying out all of BevMo. Of course, all studies that show health benefits of wine are conducted with moderate amounts which is only five ounces for a woman and ten ounces for a man. That is literally a glass or two (or half glasses if you pour anything like I do!) so with all alcoholic beverages, always drink responsibly, especially if you’re drinking for your health!

What a horrible role model for the society. Drinking in any form is not advisable. This hoopla about wine being good for you is idiotic and misinformation at best. Wine is rotten grapes, it is alcohol which is a drug, and causes all kinds of mental diseases if abused. Anyting that gives you artificial pleasure is bad for you, not to mention the risks of progressive addiction to other substances. Please don't advise people to drink!!
