Until recently, taking time off to “get in shape” seemed like a stuffy, pretentious and far too marriage oriented vacation for singles to enjoy. But it seems the day of the thousands of dollars a week fancy fitness spa for the nipped and tucked is going shabby chic? Now you too can spend your days on a sunny beach in Mexico running, surfing, lifting weights, practicing pilates or yoga while in the midst of majestic vistas, and for a fraction of the price.
One of the first retreats was started in 2002, when Melissa Perlman founded her Bikini Bootcamp program on the pristine white sand beaches of Tulum, Mexico. Each week this eco-friendly resort turns into an outdoor gymnasium where shape conscious single women can mingle and unwind while toning their tummies and churning calories. The “no boys allowed” policy apparently did not cut it, so this year Perlman decided to add “Warrior Week” for active-life oriented men, housed in separate quarters but on the same stretch of beach.
For every good concept there are copy cats, so it only make sense that providers are jumping on the bandwagon, offering fitness friendly getaways on the cheap and plenty. Las Olas, a surf camp for women also in Mexico, has been around a while longer but only recently launched La Vista Active Safaris in Carmel-by-the Sea. Escape to Shape helps explorer-types get back in gear through hiking and sculpting classes in more remote locations like Cartagena, Colombia and Marrakech, Morocco. And for a full on yoga experience, be sure to check out Inward Bound, which offers retreats in Columbia, Jamaica, Cost Rica and the United States.
Accommodations in each of these destinations are more modest, i.e. bungalow-style, but what they offer in terms of camaraderie, exercise and excursions is a lot more than many of those five star amenities.
