Extreme DIY Beauty: Never Buy Shampoo, Body Wash or Hand Soap Again

I am never going to buy store-brought shampoo again.

Many shampoo, body wash and hand soap brands contain "fragrance" in their list of ingredients. Though "fragrance" may invoke images of grassy fields and crushed flower petals, it is actually a sneaky umbrella term for a multitude of unlisted toxic chemicals with detrimental health effects. Talk about shady.

Say no to any beauty product containing fragrance and make your own beauty products instead. Once you get your feet wet in the DIY beauty scene, it is extremely fun and rather addicting. The long-term benefits are also undeniable:

- You are saving a ton of money.  After making your own super-easy body wash, you are probably not going to miss paying $7 to $8 for a bottle of brand-name body wash.

- You are helping the planet. Rather than buying a new container every time you run out of shampoo or soap, you can reuse the same bottle over and over again. Over years, that is a lot of hunks of plastic being saved from the waste.

- You are doing a huge favor to your body and health. Using completely natural ingredients on a daily basis on your hair, face, hands and body dramatically decreases your risks of detrimental health from long-term exposure to synthetic, toxic chemicals.

- Going DIY is a brave stance against materialism and consumerism overload. Your own homemade stuff is just as good, if not better, than the brand name stuff being advertised in stores. When you opt out of buying things and make your own products instead, you are helping grow a self-reliant DIY movement that is better for the planet.

DIY SHAMPOO

Recipe #1: Add 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup Castille soap and 1/2 teaspoon jojoba or grapeseed oil. Store in a bottle and shake before use. Add tea tree oil or peppermint oil for added scent and scalp stimulation. Castille soap is an all-natural soap that uses vegetable oil (usually olive oil) instead of animal fat.

Recipe #2: Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of warm water and rinse out hair.

Recipe #3: This is a "dry" shampoo for when you are running late, you don’t have time to wash your hair, but you want to get rid of the greasy unwashed look. Put 1/2 cup of cornstarch on your head, let sit for a couple of minutes, and brush out cornstartch. Cornstarch naturally absorbs oils, and is perfect for de-greasing oily hair.

DIY CONDITIONER

Recipe #1: Mix 1-3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with 3 cups distilled water. Pour over hair after shampooing.

Recipe #2: Mash avocado with egg yolk, and apply paste to hair for 15 minutes. Rinse and wash out for softer hair.

Recipe #3: Mix one tablespoon baby oil, two egg yolks and 1 cup fo water. Let sit on hair for five minutes before rinsing out.

DIY BODY WASH

Recipe #1: Add 1 cup liquid castille soap with a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

DIY HAND SOAP

Recipe #1: Check out this natural liquid soap recipe from CasaSugar.com, which is as simple as grating a bar of natural soap into a gallon of water, and warming the water until all the soap flakes are completely dissolved. By making your own DIY liquid hand soap, you’ll never have to buy another hand soap dispenser again, and simply fill up the empty ones you already used up.
