Question:
I have been told that Eastern wisdoms teach people how to restrict their egos, their desires, to free themselves from suffering, is this true?
Do Eastern techniques effect a person so that their egoistic desires diminish until eventually they are united with the One, with the non-local?
Answer:
The most effective way to become free from the grip of the ego is to directly experience that non-local reality, or the “One” as you call it. So it’s not that you try to restrict your ego in order to experience your true Self; you experience your true Self first, and that is what liberates you from identification with the ego. You have to step outside the realm of the ego completely to extricate yourself from it. Any techniques that are limited to feelings, imagination, intellectual understanding, or will power that aim to free you from the ego, are all still within the field of the ego, and therefore those mental components do not have the ability to transform the very basis of one’s identity beyond the ego.

Deepak

Dr. Chopra: Again, another brilliant..and bang on reply! Not a word more, not a word less.. just perfect, concise articulation!
It is indeed a privilege to have someone like you accessible to articulate what even the greatest of Enlightened luminaries could not and failed in the very basic translation of the foundational stuff.

The way Vernon Howard explained it in Psycho Pictography, ego is jealous of self and threatened by self and so tries to minimize our experience of self by endless chatter and mind movies. Because meditation silences ego chatter, ego tries to prevent meditation – persistently.

I use to buy into ego death until a psych. professor I had explained to me exactly what Deepak stated she stated the ego can serve the Higher Self & I find this a much more realistic approach to spirituality
Keep the peace,

Dear Deepack and intent friends
I am wondering if someone on this site could explain to me how one can do what Deepack suggests. I've been trying to free myself from the ego, which causes me a lot of suffering but have not been able to do it.
With love
Fernanda
Fernanda,
"trying" is always egoic, it is just more of the same, EGO is effort, trying, strugling, battling, debating, catagorizing, organizing, and/or striving, the path beyond ego is effortless and is not done it is recognized. The only way is through meditation, taming the mind so what is there is seen, and what is not there is dropped. The I who suffers is ego, the true self never ever suffers, there is noone to suffer, so become familiar with the mind without controlling it or fighting it, just return again and again home to mindfullness, and this will eventuall wear out ego until it becomes transparant, then ego is no problem, it is clear.

Thank you for the explanation. Would any type of meditation help. there are so many types of meditation around, courses advertised, one does not really know what type of meditation to follow. Also, I suppose one has to be disciplined and do it every day. I am struggling for time, but would have to find a way.
Thanks for your comment
Fernanda
Fernanda, the type of meditation that helps is individual, you must find one that resonates with you and that you can commit to, that is an imporatant aspect of path, to do it for you, not for anyone else or their ideas. I would recommend Shambala.org, but that is my choice, it is up you you sweetheart. And 10 minute daily meditaion is just fine, no need to make a big commitment of time.
Hi Samuel
Thank you so much for explaining and for your suggestions.
Love and peace.
Fernanda
The best way to experience the true nature of your consciousness is to learn how to calm your emotions and silence your thoughts through meditation. The driving force behind the ego is selfishness so you should be mindful of your thoughts, speech, and actions.
