Gandhi’s Relevance for 21st Century World!
Who will not be impressed by reading following quotes of Gandhi?:
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.”

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.”
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
“Hate the sin, love the sinner.”
“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.”
“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it–always.”

"I believe that Gandhi’s views were the most enlightened of all the political men in our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil."

Conclusion:

  • ‘One World’- Gandhi Speech
Italian commercial Telecom 2004 – Gandhi (w/ english n italian subtitles).
At the closing session of the Inter-Asian Relations Conferenceheld on April 2, 1947at New Delhi,Mahatma Gandhi spoke to over 20,000 visitors, delegates and observers:
This is the original Gandhiji speech:
If you want to give a message again to the West, it must be a message of ‘Love’, it must be a message of ‘Truth’. There must be a conquest [applausi], please, please, please. That will interfere with my speech, and that will interfere with your understanding also. I want to capture your hearts and don’t want to receive your claps. Let your hearts clap in unison with what I’m saying, and I think, I shall have finished my work. Therefore, I want you to go away with the thought that Asia has to conquer the West. Then, the question that a friend asked yesterday, "Did I believe in one world?" Of course, I believe in one world. And how can I possibly do otherwise, when I become an inheritor of the message of love that these great un-conquerable teachers left for us?
The closing sentence in Italian is, "if he could have communicated in that modality what would the world be like today?"
·        Message of Hope and Peace for Mankind
"Man is free and this freedom leads him towards good or evil deeds, which in turn, determine his destiny….and it is through their free will that the ghost of total destruction can be kept away. If they extract from within their souls the evil inclinations and adversarial desires; make concessions on their greedy ambitions; marginalize their arrogance; close the doors to weapon factories and discharge the soldiers and officers; make the scientists abandon their research on weapons of mass destruction; unite all countries of the world into one country; unite all people as brothers under one faith, where love and peace replace hatred and quarrel. If humanity through their free will executes all these things, they will change the course of their dark history and alleviate the horrific fate that is rapidly approaching."

    Dear Brother Greg!

    Jai HO!

You are abosluetly right!Ahimsa is one of the key words!that can be used to define Gandhi!

Actually Gandhi is a very triky personality, when it comes to comprehend him or define him!

As here in him we fined the perfect cobination of a Spirituality and Politics!the two most contradictory fields or ideologies.Another Character! who showed this combination in scriptures and litrature is only Lord Krishana! But that too is a semi historical or mythological characterization!

But no doubt Ahimsa!is most closley defining word for Gandhi!in a way!Which even Gandhi would have prefered to dfine himself,as is evident from the following devotional song(Bhajan) which Gandhi used to chant in his evening prayers with inmates of his Ashrm!at Sawrmati!(only enlish translation/meaning given here!):

    "Vaishnav* jan to tene kahiye (?????? ?? ?? ???? ?????)!"

One who is a Vaishnav(beliver in GOD!), feels and understands the pain of others

Does good to others, especially to those who are in misery

Does not let pride enter his mind,

A Vaishnav, honours and praises the the entire world

Does not criticize or say bad things about anyone

Keeps his words, actions and thoughts pure

O Vaishnav, your mother is blessed

A Vaishnav sees everything and everyone equally,

    rejects greed and avarice

Respects women especially some one else's wife as his mother

His toungue may get tired, but will never speak lies

He does not even touch someone else's property

A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments

Who has devoted himself to staunch detachment from worldly pleasures

Who has been addicted to the elixir of the name of God

For whom all the sacred places of pilgrimage are in the mind

Who has no greed and is not deceitful

Who has renounced lust and anger

The poet Narsi would like to see such a person

By whose virtue, his entire family gets salvation

*Vashnavas! are firm beliver in the 'Principle of non-killing!'('AHIMSA!').

And Gandhi himself belonged to a Vasnavite!Family!

So you are absolutely right!in defining Gandhi by the word 'Ahimsa'!in any and every situation.Jai Ho!

    Amen!

    With profound love and regards!
