Dear Peace Friends,
On Sunday night, November 1, 2009, a unique and unprecedented event took place in Washington, DC. Ambassadors of the most peaceful nations from every continent in the world were assembled together – to honor their achievements, to learn from them, and to help lead all peoples and nations toward peace. It was, and is, an historic moment, and one which alters the course of peacebuilding in every region, at every level.
The Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations was developed in partnership with the JWH Fullbright Center and the Alliance for Peacebuilding, and builds upon the blueprint of the Global Peace Index, conceived by Australian businessman and philanthropist Steve Killelea, co-founder of the Institute of Economics and Peace. Rather than focus predominately on conflict and violence, these thought-leaders and organizations have chosen to explore a new question:
Who are the most peaceful countries on the planet, and what can we learn from them? IS peace possible? Can we actually make the world a peaceful place?
The answer, as demonstrated by the eighteen countries being honored this week, is yes. It CAN be done.
Over the coming weeks, The Peace Company’s Peace Leadership Institute will share highlights and updates of this ground-breaking work in the field of peacebuilding. The Symposium continues today and tomorrow with a closing plenary and press event that is open to the public this Tuesday afternoon. (see details at www.peacefulnations.org)
Today, we celebrate this message of promise and hope: Peace IS Possible, and the pathway to achieving it is in our hands.
