…..imo, would be "God IS." Whether God is great or not so great is all in the eye of the beholder. God doesn’t need greatness or insignificance, only man does. So, imo, GOD IS whether great or small or in-between. The argument is only for those who love the argument for arguments sake, but it has nothing what-so-ever to do with God, as much as it does with man’s argumentative skills, more correct statements would be, "my argument for GOD, is great," or Hitchenson could say, " my argument for God is not great, is great

Glad to here from You "God is". Actually God does not need our approval it will be more appropriate to say – "IS" or existence, not even say word GOD, because it is Man invented word(God) for the x factor, which is all and every thing beyond expression. Those realize him say nothing and become silent. That’s why he is defined as Sat-(existence),Chit(Consciousness) and Ananda(Bliss).
But my argument is for those who are on spiritual Journey to realize’ That’(God), but are bewildered or confused by the statements of people like CHristopher saying and writing book stating and proving-God is not Great(How religions Poison Everything)"or even say God does not exists. For realized peoples or people with faith in him no argument is needed.
See my blogs and intents in an answer I have made it clear God is beyond Mind(argument),it the very essence of our consciousness. It is a state of ‘being’ and not even ‘Is’. So beyond all definitions or statements. But to silence the mind to realize beginners, one has to argue and go deep in to answers to several questions, first-@run

I am enjoying your reflections on the Divine. In terms of Hitchens book, there are some things he writes of that I agree with, especially, the acts of violence done by fundamentalists in many religions. I also appreciate his insights on the contradictions and unhealthy image of the Divine found in both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. This said, I also find his lack of appreciation for the gifts of religion to humankind to be without balance. As you have written, the Vedas speak to the very essence of the Divine and are beyond religion or dogma.
My greatest sadness over Hitchins book is that he does not indicate an appreciation for the "spiritual" or "spirituality" – a way of life that the Vedas make possible and that transcends "being religious." I wish he would read and reflect on Aurobindo. He might then appreciate Aurobindo’s prediction of a coming transformation in consciousness that we are begining to witness among people all over our world who are realizing that God is one, people who share your understanding of the essence of the Divine.
Finally, thank you for posting the Upanishad passage from the Svetasvatara Upanishad, it is my favorite piece of spiritual literature ever recorded.

I too apprciate Hutichinson for some good points in his book, especially the Title of the Book-"God is not Great",as in his title itself he is not saying GOD does not exists, he is only saying God is , but he is not great. And further his sub -title he says "How Religion Poisons Every thing".
Also, it is good that through his popular book at least, he has revived the ‘debate about GOD’, and has drawn attention of new generation at least to the forgotten word "GOD" ,which west has presumed -"God is dead" (German: "Gott ist tot" (help·info); also known as the death of God) as per the widely-quoted statement by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
Luckly through the developments in Information and communication science and technology and ‘Intent’ like bloggs on internet and other resources , and wide communication among global civilization of ours,we are in a position to look ‘God’ in more holistic ,and comprehensive and open, freestyle manner, without religious or scientific bias.
And it seems to me be the right time to know the unknowable(GOD), a little more clearly atleast, even if all of us can not realize him instantly or atleast in this life time.
Regarding Terrorist in some fundamentalist religions,it should be made clear that Terrrism is not the product of Religions. It is creation of politicians of west (first in middle east and now in Afganistan), who with vested interests created and equiped and trained these monesters after second world war( during cold war with Russia) for their own political and selfish purposes (of exploiting Oil and natural resources to fullfill the demands of their pertolium and war based industries).
And now the monester is after them, and they are advocating war against terror,or Greener world, and Peace,Peace,Peace and Non-proliferations, instead of erradicating poverty and hunger world over and containing their various greedy , materialistic ,raclessly expliotative and inhuman ways of manipulating world politics, as an when needed, with their own Hollywood style/cow boyish methods and equipments. Instead, they need real Eastern Wisdom of Love and compassion to one and all. Not the pseudo christanity , or a pseudo spirituality or pseudo love or interest in ‘Buddhism’ (as they shy to accept as part of larger Hindu paranoma /or Indian Philosophy), which they want to call Eastern Philosophy. A genuine and honest concern.
It should be made clear that the Terrorists are not product of any religion and neither they are religious. But they are political creations and they are actually using religion as a shiled. Its like using scince for creating atom bomb and cursing the science, and not the man or politicians for misusing science.
Similarliy it is not the fault of Religion or Religions, not the "Failure of God" (as Christopher suggests),but to me it is the Failure of MAN himself or We the people.
Man call himself Man, but he has not really evolved into a "human being"(Man with humanitarian Qualities),and some where in his lower brain the animal instincts are still operating. It is for this reason the great Indian Philospher and Late President of India Dr. Srvapalli Radhakrishnan said:
"We have learnt to fly in the skies, we have learnt to race in the waters, but alas we have not yet learnt to walk on the earth."and
The famous poet Galib says-"Admi ko Mayyser nahin insan hona” (Man has not been able to be human).
Some body has rightly said: "MAN IS THE ENEMY."
Thats why in Indian religions there is call to win self (lower nature)/and become jin(as in Jains)or know the ‘realself’ and be Divine.
or atleast men in real sense of the word "Man" or "Human-being", follow any religious path(Bible,Gita,Koran….ect.or Real christaina =realHindu,=real muslim=real humanitarian=real athest=secular (unbiased) , and become HUMAN.
So Religion neither poisons, nor God has failed, it is politics that poisons and it is the man in us failed not the God. On the contrary God has faith in man and still creating and carrying us towards perfection sitting in our hearts (as love) and our consciousness. Till the super human being of Aurobindo is not evolved and Man is not finally established in its true nature-"sat-chid-ananda," as said in Yoga. Till then Om Shanti,Shanti,Shanti (Peace,Peace,Peace)’.
