Receive
re- = back + capere = to take
This is one of the hardest principles taught in the spiritual life. We have gone overboard in the giving department—waaaaay overboard, and taking “it is more blessed to give than to receive” to the proverbial nth degree, we burn out on giving and wonder why. It’s simple really.
Receiving is part of an equation that follows the inexorability of mathematical principles. (Read this next bit twice.) The cost of giving is receiving. (Maybe I should write it again!) The cost of giving is receiving. What this means is: we cannot give without receiving, and the Latin roots of this word tell us so. They mean to take back.
Here’s how true giving works. First, we receive from God, and then we give. Next, we receive from God again, and give again. Ask: How can I take back to God what I’ve received so I may give again today?
Infinition:
Receiving is part of the divine equation of giving here on earth. I have this understanding in my cells from now on: first I receive, then I can give till it’s time to receive again.
