Deep Griha works with the marginalized communities in Pune, India. We had the chance to work with them as volunteer capacity builders through our teambuilding workshop. Though we were there on our own dime, we were so enriched by the experience, we realized we received more than we gave.
Several things struck us:
Generosity in adversity is unconscious. We were invited to have lunch at the home of one of the HIV AIDs workers at Deep Griha, whose name is Meera. Meera, her husband (who drives a rickshaw), her two children, her neice and a renter live in three rooms in the Tadiwalla slum in Pune. Meera generously offered to give us a tour of the slum, and then fed us like kings and queens, sitting on the floor of her front room. We were overwhelmed by the openhandedness of her generosity, and humbled by her friendship.
I hope you will click through to the Deep Griha website (http://www.deepgriha.org/templates/System/details.asp?id=29290&PID=633724)to see the beautiful calendars they have made for 2009. The money from the calendar will go to the work in the slums – I know because i have been there and see how the organization works – very lean and intentional.
Please help them help the communities of Pune. One $USD goes so far in India – you will be making a real difference in so many people’s lives.
