Now here’s an example of creative activism.
Westboro Baptist Church has become infamous for their demonstrations against gay rights in the United States. You’ve probably seen the pictures. They’re the ones with the signs that read “God Hates Fags.”
Recently, a small non-profit group called Planting Peace decided to give Westboro a run for its money. Planting Peace bought the house across the street from Westboro and is in the process of painting the entire outside the colors of the gay pride rainbow.
Planting Peace is known for working on issues related to poverty, the environment and bullying. They say they hope the house in rainbow colors will be, “a visual reminder of our commitment, as global citizens, to equality for all.”
Aaron Jackson, founder of Planting Peace, says the plan is to ride the coattails of Westboro’s large media presence. “We’re going to take the negative attention and try to spin it into something positive,” David Hammet, a representative of the organization, told Gawker. “Instead of millions of children around the world getting this hate message, they’re going to see this message of compassion and love.”
