How to be Happier…by Working for Free!

I’m sure many people will read a bit of what I have to say and quickly discard it.  And why wouldn’t they?  Our lives are SO busy and there is SO much to do…how would I ever find time to VOLUNTEER?  And how could that possible make me a happier person?  The answers are simple and are two fold.

First off, when you find something you are passionate about to volunteer your time to, as I have, the time creates itself.  I love animals but cannot afford to make veterinary care my full time job so I have been volunteering at my local animal shelter as a dog walker!  The time I take out of my schedule to spend an hour or two a week with these amazing creatures goes by so quickly and never seems to create a crimp in my schedule. In fact, I find myself watching less TV and spending less time fiddling around on the internet just to get in a few extra hours a week.  When you heart is in it and it represents your passions…it is EASY to find a way to volunteer.

Secondly, how can volunteering make ME a happier person?  Anyone who says they volunteer simply out of the goodness of their heart is full of it!  I’m sorry but its true.  We could all be doing lots of selfish things with our time and volunteering isn’t one of them.  But what those who do volunteer and are honest about it will tell you that they get the BIGGEST sense of love and accomplishment out of their volunteer hours.  I can’t even begin to tell you how much these gorgeous, loving and appreciative pooches have done to lift my spirits!  I came to help them and they ended up helping me.  I am never as happy and as fulfilled all week as I am after my walks with the dogs at the PSPCA.  To see the love and excitement in their eyes as I approach with a treat and a leash lets me know that God has given me this volunteer opportunity to enrich BOTH of our lives.  Nothing you can buy will give you the same euphoric feeling!

I fully realize it can be a diffcult thing to start.  But look around you and see where your passions lie.  Once you do that a few internet searches will provide you with a bevy of organizations that need your help.  Make sure they have solid volunteer training classes so that you are aware of their policies and procedures and once you get the hang of it…bring a friend along to volunteer too!  Spread the love and feel the warmth that only comes from working for free!  There is no greater paycheck out there than refilling the coffers of your soul!

About angie.provost

I grew up in the small Northern California town of Weed, on the North side of California's largest active volcano...Mount Shasta.  I was raised by a wonderful single mother whom at an early age taught me the importance of caring for our bodies with natural and organic foods and products, the benefits of holisitic health, and the responsibility we have as humans to care for our Mother Earth.  It was a joy to grow up in this area of unparalleled natural beauty and immediate access to all of the splendors of the Shasta Cascade National forest.  I've carried my love of nature and our earth with me throughout my life and owe this to my mother and to my hometown of which I'm immensely proud.

Life has landed me in Roseville, California...now married to my wonderful husband Frank and our two beautiful children Joshua and Samantha and dogs Harley and Roxy.  Though I live in the suburbs now I still carry my love for the mountains and nature in my heart and find myself most happy when I journey back up north for a visit with my family.  I am blessed to be extremely close to my mother, my stepfather, my sister and my three lifelong best friends of nearly 30 years.  I cherish them all and derive great comfort and support from their love.  My biggest supporter is my husband, whom champions my love of writing and urges me at all junctions to pursue this creative outlet.  He believes in me and enables me to believe in myself.  With this love and support I began writing a weekly column for megsmakeup.com entitled "Green Chi Tuesdays".  I try and review natural and organic beauty products and report back my honest opinions.  It has been a weekly source of delight for me and I thoroughly enjoy sharing the knowledge I've gained with others.  I will continue to write in any venue available and hope to change my life on a base level by living my dream to write as a career.

I am very proud to have this column featured here on Intent.com.  As I meander through the website I find myself submerged in a pool of like minded and wonderful people.  I truly see this opportunity as a growth mechanism for me both spiritually and creatively and look forward to living my intent.  To me, there is no greater gift I can give my children than the knowledge that we can always strive to be a better person today than we were yesterday.  I look forward to the journey

Working for free is a paradox. IF you serve someone, the Universe will make someone

    serve you back. It
