How to Promote Your Posts (and What the Heck is Twitter?!)

Good Afternoon Intent Community,

Our blogging post this week is on SHARING YOUR POST (and we’ll just be scratching the surface)!

You might be thinking, "I’m not a promoter. I just like to write for myself." Wonderful too, but what about sharing your thoughts or discoveries with your friends? Your peers? Your industry? Getting information to the right people, supporting authors you love and establishing yourself as a voice in your field–these important acts are why we made it easy for you to share what you write or read on Intent with the (cyber)world.

  • Whether you are writing a blog post or intent or reading one, look for the bar just above the headline that says Share. If you mouse over this, you’ll see icons that allow you to quickly and easily submit your post or intent to popular social media sites like Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, MySpace, Delicious and Google. Once you choose which sites you want to submit to, the link and title of the article is automatically populated in the site. You can write a brief review and voila–you’re exposing more people to great information and having fun in the meanwhile!

  • Each social media site has different benefits to it. If you post a great story that you find to Facebook, it’s primarily your friends who will view the link and article (Btw, Facebook is terrific because it let’s you really customize–picture and all–how you want to post the story to your profile). If you submit a killer piece to other jumping social media sites like StumbleUpon, Digg or Reddit, it can be viewed by anyone on those sits. So these sites are dynamite for introducing more people to your content.

  • Ok, Twitter (doesn’t it seem that everyone is gabbing about Twitter lately?). Twitter is mini-publishing platform that falls somewhere in the middle between friend-centric Facebook and more open social media sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit. With Twitter, anyone can subscribe to your updates (you don’t have to approve them) and you can subscribe to anyone’s. I "follow" Shaquile O’Neal and Deepak Chopra among several hundred others.

The two most common things that people use Twitter for are publishing content and building relationships. You can publish a link to Twitter by cilcking the Twitter icon on the Share bar. Again, the Intent story link is automatically populated into the What are you doing? field. People write books on efficacious Twitter use, and while I wouldn’t personally pick it up for weekend reading, I found social media expert Guy Kawasaki’s tips on Twittering massively helpful.

  • Next to the Share button above every post and intent is an Email icon, which I use to send interesting articles to my mom, dad and friends. It’s a super easy way to get the content you think they might like right under their noses.

Have questions, tips, tricks or discoveries? Share them in the comments below and I’ll make sure to get back to you. Fare well and be well, Intenters!

xoxo, Eden

Well it is really interesting that this post by intent editor comes at a time after

1)losing member blogs page on home a lil while ago.

    2) And now after losing 'latest posts' tab under the coverage of advertisement on upper right corner, the tab which was the only tool for many to read latest posts of members .You cant get that tab now until you really tweak settings of browser every single time.Site is very 'user-unfriendly'.

Hey Shweta, what browser are you using? If you aren't at least using IE7(IE8 coming soon, yay!) or FF3 I would strongly suggest upgrading, it is very important to stay on top of the latest software when using the internet. We haven't seen any Opera users but I have personally tested our site in IE6/7 and FF2/3, there are some minor issues in the older browsers but aside from one issue with the "Latest Intents" on FF2 everything works fine for me.

If you are having specific problems please let us know, best is usually via an email to support@intent.com, the more information you give us the better i.e. your browser name and version, operating system and what page you had the problem on.

    Thanks.

Hi Tom, I am suing IE6 and see the same problem losing 'latest posts' tab under the coverage of advertisement on upper right corner , i guess this definitely needs correction and cant be blamed on users :-) )

    Thanks

Hi Schweta, I understand your frustration but why the negativity? This site seems to be full of good people, and the editors have assisted me a few times when I was stuck. So far I don't see anything malicious about the way this site works. It works well for me but I don't use IE6.

The address of the latest posts page is http://www.intent.com/latest If you bookmark that page you can go straight to it. it is the most lively part of the site, oh also there is http://www.intent.com/intents which is pretty cool too.

good luck and i hope you have a good day!!!

Hi Eric ,as far as negativity is concerned , u r true , I get surprised myself that how come I get such a negative vibes from this website everytime I login. Dont know it is me or website.

And yes Tom, I am using IE6 and have no intention of using IE 7 , might think of IE 8 after it gets declared safe unlike IE7 who was declared very unsafe from security point of view not so long ago and they had given a good run around to user to reinstall it ater fixing it.I had to go back to IE6 and never bothered to reinstall it. The lesson for me was never jump to new things at drop of the hat, not everytime they are better.

    Shweta,

    Some nerdy feedback on browsers…

Forget IE or just use it for certain things (some web site's scripts won't always work such as MSNBC video player, so then I use IE).

    Try Firefox (FF).

Not only can you import IE favorites as Bookmarks, but you can get all kinds of add-ons and browser skins/themes for free. Including one called "View page in EI" :o )

Granted, I'm kind of a borderline techie having been online for over 12 years and built my own computer, etc. and its tweak-ability through add-ons and so on offers nice control over its behavior.

But one doesn't have to get that heavy into extras to have it work well = it's not only nerds who use Firefox.

    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/.

You may also want to look into Google Chrome and/or Opera, though I use FF 99% of the time and IE for stuff as stated. I have Chrome as a backup.

    As to Internet Explorer:

IE has always been way too top heavy and thus slow compared to FF and others.

That said, if you still want to stick with IE:

    — IE7 is NOT buggy compared to IE6, so relax and upgrade.

As to IE8, it's still too "beta" to go for it, so wait on that one.

Always use Firefox! You can't go wrong with the Mo! :)

He is such a cute little fox too! Can't say the same for the red Mozilla thing…

Shweta no wonder you've been missing the fun!

Seriously Shweta here is the link just go! :)

(short version: try pressing Ctrl-F5 in IE to force reload the css files)

I never meant to blame any users, unless you are viewing our site with a browser you built with your own two coding hands you are in the same boat as I. Personally I agree with Babita on this one, Microsoft hasn't put out a good browser yet, Firefox is my browser of choice. IE8 is actually really good(even in beta as it is now) and IE6 is about as unsafe as the web gets right now since it is no longer being updated.

If you are still using IE6 you may have it set up to ignore updated cache files, it is a common setting change that many make when trying to secure their browser, but it makes for websites that can break from time to time. To force your browser to reload the files hold down the Control key and press F5, this is a force-reload and tells the browser to ignore what it thinks is correct and ask our servers for the most recent files. In most cases this will fix problems where images or forms are blocking parts of a page, but there are several minor versions of IE6 with many many quirks(it is known as one of the buggiest browsers, in terms of compatibility).

As a matter of opinion IE6 is about the worst option for viewing the web right now, Google Chrome, Opera and Safari(yes there is a Windows version) are all better options if you don't like Firefox, but we will continue to do our best to fix the little things with the limited resources we have, thanks again.

I have found that the best solution is to let it all go, as there are always issues and problems everywhere and on all the websites on the WWW. It's a process that is always growing and developing, so if one does not let it go and flow effortlessly, they will stay frustrated. Just my experience, i.e., once it perfected, all of a suddened it not fast enough, so the process starts all over again with all those bugs to perfect….it never ends!

  10. careforall March 5, 2009 at 6:49 am #

Tom I am using IE6 for past 2 years and i have not seen any issues on any other WWW site excpet this recent bug on your website , buddy agree or disagree it is a bug on your site and needs correction on your part ( no egoes as you are also part on Intet :-) ) ) ..

  11. Oberon March 5, 2009 at 10:42 am #

Hi Shweta, I believe that what we experience and see in the world is a reflection of us. I've found this site to be very positive. True, there are bugs, but Intent seems to be listening to the feedback and trying to make things better. I find primarily inspiration and kindness here.

  12. tom March 5, 2009 at 10:46 am #

Unfortunately I cannot fix what I can't see, like I said I can't see the problem and nobody has given me enough information to duplicate it. If I can recreate the problem I will gladly fix it, but based on our statistics there are less than 5% of our users still using IE6 so spending time to correct problems on out-of-date software won't be a priority for our tiny team.

Back on topic, anybody have any questions relevant to the post or any ideas or techniques they use on twitter or other sites?

  13. editoreden March 5, 2009 at 10:49 am #

Hello friends! My this thread has taken a complete left turn :) Any comments on promoting your content ?

Eric, Phillip, Babita, Char and Oberon we appreciate your support and positivity.

Shweta – our intent is to create a positive place for everybody on the internet and I apologize if it doesn't seem like it but I can't see what is giving you that vibe?

If you are having trouble getting to particular links I would suggest just bookmarking – http://www.intent.com/latest – we have worked (especially Tom here) tremendously hard to jazz up the page with all kinds of new features and we hope you get to enjoy them as much as we have making them.

Care – there are no egoes on intent, we are love all kind of people. We have admitted on many occasions that our site has many bugs that need fixing and thats what we work on all day. Our intent is to provide you the easiest wellness experience. Any glitches are just little bumps on our way there.

    Thanks all :)

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

I made a change that should fix the problem some were seeing in IE6, hopefully it doesn't break it for people that weren't having the problem, but I don't think it will.

Just wanted to say that I promoted one of my posts on Reddit, and got some really interesting comments/messages because of it. Thanks guys!

  16. careforall March 5, 2009 at 8:22 pm #

Dear Tom: I was having problems with the "latest post" tab being covered too. It is ok now, thanks for your effort Tom. Much appreciated.
