Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, Sadie. We wanted to start out by asking you about the video you offer on GaiamTV, Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga. What does core strength mean to you?
Some people are surprised by this, but to me, Core Strength, like yoga itself, is not just one thing. It is a self-revealing transformation that happens on all levels. When we focus on one aspect of moving from our core, whether it’s learning about and activating the whole-body muscle meridian that runs through the core of the body, or acting from a core of personal authenticity, the other aspects of a person begin to line up as well. I notice that students who generate their yoga poses from deeper center begin to feel more empowered, confident, and self-accepting. From there, they shift their habits, agreements and choices to serve their highest truths instead of reacting, coping or making deals with others from a more unconscious or fearful place. So, when I ask a student to get on the mat and focus on the ‘core’, some people think it’s going to be a big abdominal workout — which it can be. But they often find themselves embarking upon an even greater adventure within this practice, and soon realize they’re in for the most creative, freeing, holistic ride of their life.
How has the core strength practice influenced your life personally?
Since I embrace core strength as the practice of knowing, nourishing and taking actions from myself in every way, core strength has infused and influenced my lie in every way. I was very sick during my teens with a central nervous system disease which rendered me unable to fully function for 2 years. I had to relearn how to breathe, move, and deal with my anxieties, all from the inside out. When I first started yoga, it was restorative/therapeutic, so I built the strong flow practice you can now learn with me from the ground up and from the core of me outward, which is what I ask my students to do for themselves. Over the course of 20 years, I have seen my attitude, beliefs, and mental, physical, emotional and spiritual strength and resiliency increase a thousand-fold. There is not one moment of my life, from relationships with myself and others, the experience of my yoga postures, my understanding of how to navigate life’s ups and downs, to all the choices I make to move toward health (not away) that isn’t yet another opportunity to practice core strengthening on a daily basis.
What is your intent in sharing this practice with others?
When I think about what drives me to offer my thoughts and creations to other yogis, I always come to rest on one word: empowerment. I’m passionate about helping people discover more tools, new perspectives and wildly effective strategies for living more powerfully both on and off the mat. When a student stops looking outward for their sense of center, realizes that they are at the core of their experience, and consistently circles back to doing their own self-loving and nourishing work, all their other seeming challenges begin to fade away. Watching that process unfold for others, as it did for me, and continues to do, is one of my life’s greatest joys.
Totally reshape your body, lose weight and get lean, toned and strong. This cutting-edge practice gives you twice the benefits for the time you spend on the mat. Because you move continuously from deep center, you’ll burn more calories (yes–it’s cardio!), spark your fat-melting metabolism and transform your whole body from the inside out.
