Inception: Worlds Within Worlds and the Perception of Time…

I recently saw the movie Inception and I really enjoyed the portrayal of dreams within dreams, within dreams, within dreams and the shifting experience of time for the characters at each deeper level of dreaming.

I found this intriguing since there are actually "fields" of subtle energy associated with the physical body that appear to have a related consciousness experience that is somewhat similar.

These fields are electromagnetic in nature and are hypothesized to organize the physical structure and function of the body.  Each "layer" of this nested hierarchy of fields (think of those Russian Dolls that open to reveal smaller and smaller versions) provides a different depth of consciousness experience.  According to many wisdom traditions this is the involution of consciousness into matter, from Oneness to the experience of a seperate being-ness in the world.

The involution is a step-down somewhat like this:

  • Oneness involutes into duality or what one might call "soul".
  • Soul involutes into "mind".
  • Mind involutes into "emotion".
  • Emotion involutes into life-force, and all of these together make up the physical body.

As human beings grow and evolve we develop the physical anatomy (higher brain structures for example) and biological processes (entrainment of heart, respiratory, and spinal patterns for example) enabling us to experience even more depth of consciousness and "wake up" from various "dreams" that we have been experiencing.

Whereas the characters in Inception are going deeper and deeper into sleep to experience these dreams, we have the opportunity to experience them through becoming more and more awake.

One’s experience of time changes as we evolve.  It slows down as our ability to observe from higher consciousness states develops.  I’ll give you an example:

When in survival, defense or life or death physiology, we experience time as second by second or minute by minute only.

When in high emotion/crisis (not life or death though) our experience of time changes.  We process things by the hour as well, rather than just seconds to minutes.

When in the cognitive mind, we experience time as months to years to decades and can even conceptualize centuries.

When we begin to transcend cognitive mind however, we can experience time from what one might call "soul" perspective.  Here time slows down even more and we might experience the soul’s depth and wisdom over seemingly eons or epocs.

As we transcend that duality we merge as part of all creation and time ceases to exist.  There is no seperate observer to dream up a timeline, there is no past, no future…just "Is-ness".

To the creators of Inception, I give you a big thumbs up for how you wove together similar concepts into an entertaining film.  I’d also love to hear from you about your experience with time depending on your state and where you were "observing" from in your consciousness.

Warmly,

Dr. John
