The London 2012 Olympics came to an end yesterday. The spectacular closing ceremony featured many great performances, including one by John Lennon. The late Beatle appeared on screen and sang ‘Imagine’, one of his most popular songs. It was the perfect song for the moment.
The whole world had spent the past 17 days in harmony and peace. We had put aside our differences and had come together to celebrate bravery and talent. We were as happy for Usain Bolt as we were for Michael Phelps, when they both achieved greatness. We overjoyed by the triumph of Misty May and Kerri Walsh the same way we were by what Mo Farah achieved. We teared up at the sight of Gaby Douglas taking the gold the same way we did when we saw double amputee Oscar Pistorius run the 400m race. It was less of an International competition and more of a celebration of the human spirit. For two weeks, it was almost the world that John Lennon dreamed of.
Unfortunately the peace and harmony that the Olympics brought won’t continue much after the games end. We will soon go back to fighting over things such as religion and oil. We will focus on what divides us and forget that at the end of the day we are all just human beings made out of the same flesh and bones.
The pessimists or realists would say that the world that John Lennon dreamed of is unrealistic and impossible, but like he sang in his song — he is not the only dreamer. Walt Disney once said “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” A peaceful world is not impossible, it will just take a lot of dreamers coming together to make it happen.
