Just Moved? 7 Ideas For Scoring Some Cheap Furniture, Appliances and Other Interior Knick Knacks

Did you just moved into a new place and are still eating your meals on a foldable chair with no table? Or did you just get rid of a bunch of old stuff and are now ready to revamp your living space with a whole lot of new stuff?

Whatever your current living situation is, it is always fun to redecorate and reorganize your home or apartment with updated furniture and other interior decorations. Here are seven ideas to start your epic hunt for that cute bistro table or funky artwork that will really make your nook the envy of all your neighbors.

1. Craigslist. Duh. It is worth stating the obvious, but Craigslist.org is always chock full of people in your neighborhood wanting to sell or get rid of their old furniture, appliances and vintage interior decorations that are eyesores for them but may be your next eclectic treasure.

2. Facebook Marketplace–Especially during graduation season. If you live near a big college campus, check to see when the academic year is ending. Enter the zipcode for the Marketplace section on Facebook.com to see what college students are selling or practically giving away. At the end of every academic year, many graduating seniors are moving out of their apartments and are desperate to get rid of their Ikea tables, bookshelves, cabinets, toaster ovens and other useful home items (usually bought with their parents’ money, too!).

3. Freecycle.org. Join your local online freecycle group and see if anybody in your nook fo the woods is eager to get rid of furniture, appliances or something that you really need for your new space. If you are patient and respond quickly, you just may score that great futon bed or never-used box of picture frames for FREE.

4. Your local Salvation Army or Thrift Store. Gather up all your pocket change and spare dollars to buy some cheap plates, cups, frames, flower vases and other second knick-knacks. If you’re lucky, you might find a handy bookshelf or table that will be perfect for your home with some light touch-ups and quick cleaning.

5. Overstock.com. Though a bit pricier than the aforementioned options since these products are all brand new, you will still be saving a lot of money on quality furnishings compared to the store price if you find a mattress, furniture, ottoman or other home accessory you are absolutely dying to have. The big perk is that you only have to pay $1 for shipping!

6. Your local swap meet. It’s like seeing a multitude of yard sales all conveniently in one location. Plus, you have the opportunity to barter in person, too.

7. Your immediate family, friends, friends of friends, relatives, anyone you know. People always have unused stuff lying around or are dying to get rid of that kitchsy teapot that they won at last year’s office white elephant gift exchange. Get the word out there that you are looking for stuff and you just never know who in your contacts is eager to get rid of something that would be perfect for you.
