Leo’s “Fight Religion” Blog #1 – Hello World

Hello fellow earthlings and intenders!

I’m proud to say that I am currently having my bloginity taken away from me. Yup, this is my first blog ever and I’m really happy it’s on this site. I love this whole idea about intending and I’ve found lots of inspiration already.

I’ve noticed there is a lot of religious people on this site and I hope I am not offending you guys too much by my straight forward nature. I guess some of you, by looking at my main intent and profile, must think that I am the Devils offspring or something, but I am pretty sure I’m no more the Devils offspring than yourself. ;) I just like to speak openly about my thoughts and I hope you will too. If anyone would like to discuss different views on religion and spirituality or what not, I’m more than happy to join in on a good discussion. I am not afraid of being challenged, in fact I want you to change my views as this often is a sign of personal growth. It’s easy to take a stance, but it usually takes far more energy and thought to change one.

Whenever I feel like it I’ll try and update this blog with thoughts and experiences around spirituality and my quest to free the world from "Organized blind faith" :-)

Please check out my profile and my main intents comment replies for my views on some parts of life and leave a comment if you got anything on your mind!

Kind regards

Leo Ødegaard

About fightreligion

27 year old, Norwegian viking. Born in the sign of Sagittarius and co-founder of the site www.fightreligion.com

Although my main intent is to clear the world from religion it does not mean that I don't want people to be spiritual or believe in some kind of god. I just want what they believe in to be personal and not something they just believe because somebody they know does it. I want people to think properly through why they believe what they do since it is only through common sense we can reach the full potential of love; and common sense is impossible to achieve without the presence of thought.

Motivation:

Personal belief:

I guess my belief is to keep an open, but critical mind. I am not convinced or think that there is a high probablility that one or several gods exists, but I am still open for the idea that they might.

I do think there is a big chance that there is more for us after this life. Do I know for certain? Nope. I will try to explain as best I can why I believe this, please excuse my english if you are having trouble understanding me, English is not my primary language or even my secondary language. First I want to go back to the beginning of existence. What would have to exist first? I think a good guess would be time. Do you believe in time? If so, did time begin? If you believe in time I think there is a big chance that you also believe that time has always been and always will be, even if we are not here to experience it. To me, time seems to be eternal. If you agree with me so far then try to think of the length of your existence compared to eternity. In a cosmic sense; -What are the chance that you would experience existence only in this life? Even if you lived to be 120 years; this lifetime would be quite insignificant compared to the span of eternity or even a billion years. What are the odds that you are alive just at this moment? The odds are incredibly small if you think we only have this life. If you believe we get more than one shot at life, then us being alive just at this moment in time suddenly makes a whole lot more sense, atleast to me.

Quantum physicists have over the recent years discovered compelling evidence that other dimensions really exist. I have a feeling that this could lead to a revolution in our understanding of the universe and our spirituality.

Oooh, I was not aware that they have done this to some of their contributers. :X Maybe I should be more carefull then. Thanks a bunch for making me aware of this! If this is true then I hope the owners will never do this again for their own sake. Not only will this site get far less users, but they will also seperate certain groups in our society from eachother even more. I hope their God will forgive their sins..

That video you linked me was awesome, I wish all schools in the world would show it to their students.

Thanks a bunch and good luck to you too!

It seems there is now enough reason on our planet to identify religious extremist and fundamentalist as counterproductive and often evil, and maybe we are on our way to help them disappear. People all over the world are taking notice.

But that still leaves the problem of

    Erich engel:

I think you are correct that organized religion puts peoples curiosity off, because believers tend to often find negative stuff when they discover the truth and they learn that being curious is something negative which may lead to hurt feelings. Facts can be very inconvenient for an extreme believer.

I do think quite differently of faith though. I think it is fully possible to have faith without being deluded or ignorant of facts. In my view Faith does not have any borders, rules or limits and it evolves with your personal growth. Having a healthy fantasy (which faith partly consists of) is also what helped Einstein create his theories, he said this himself. However, the moment you put restrictions on your faith it goes blind and this is in my eyes exactly what religion does, it restricts your soul, heart and mind.

Many people need to believe, but they do not need organized religion where their beliefs cannot differ too much. What many need is some place to be spiritual with other people and this can be done without a given type of religion.

    Cheers

    Seek Knowledge Enlightenment Peace:

It's hard to say who is the better person when all is said. I do however believe that the world is not as good as it can be and we have a lot of proof about certaing things which do help, like communication and the ability to understand others.

So yeah, I think it is well proven that rationality, education and reason is worth fighting for, although I am not sure if we will ever see the "light". :-)

I'd like you to watch this lecture by Ravi Zacharias. Despite the title, this video has nothing to do with creationism. I wouldn't ever try to convince someone of such an irrational viewpoint as creationism. The lecture is broken into 6 parts and each part is about 8 minutes.

This man is the first person to introduce me to the debate on the existence of God. After seeing this I started learning as much as I could and as fast as I could. I lost my faith after the collapse of my belief in creationism and I became an antagonist to religion. I studied dawkins, hitchen's, Harris, and others. When I started to look at the evidence I always went back to this lecture. Although this lecture was unable to convince me by any sense, I figured out that belief wasn't as irrational as I once thought.

1 year of research later I came to the conclusion that God exists. This video will not convince you of anything…but it will show you that religion is not all that irrational.

In your spare time I'd also like you to watch this documentary on historicity of the Gospels.

This video very lightly scratches the surface on some of the arguments for the historicity of the gospels. At the end of this you'll still have a lot of unanswered questions but hopefully your heart will be a little softened.

Leo, what happened to your sight, fightreligion.com?

  11. fightreligion October 29, 2009 at 5:48 am #

    Hello my dear Paul =)

I just sent you a mail on youtube, the same mail I have been trying to send 3 times already, did you get it this time?

http://www.fightreligion.com is being moved to a different server. I also want to update some of the content on that site since I've investigated a lot about religion and philosophy the past year, much thanks especially to you. I feel much better equipped now than before to handle arguments and existencial enquieries, so for this I wanna say a big thanks to you Paul!

I watched the two first parts of Ravi Zacharias lecture and already I am feeling he has gotten a lot of things wrong. He said for instance that Richard Dawkins says there is no evil. I think he is being very petty and deliberately misunderstanding Dawkins. Ofcourse Dawkins think is is wrong to rape small children. I believe like Dawkins that there are no evil people, only evil acts. The individual who raped this child in Zacharias story was under influence and delusioned. I personally believe that if this rapist was not delusional then he would not have raped the child so this story proves my point further; -if you want to fight evil you have to fight delusions, and religion is one of the biggest advocates for delusion.

Zacharias also said that morals have to come from a moral giver. Well, I think that the moral giver is evolution and not necessarily God. We have tons of scientific evidence which support that basic moral understanding has been developed through nature as a means to assist us as a social specie. No scientific evidence support morals comming from a deity, and what is evidence if it is not scientific? Non-scientific evidence will always be subjective philosophical evidence and therefor never something which everybody will unanimously and objectively agree upon. Non-scientific evidence is arbitrary and therefor I believe one cannot use it to be sure about what is real, one can however use it to hold beliefs and this I am not against at all, I think it is in fact very necessary in many situations, but beliefs can't be facts.

I also watched the video about the gospels. I've already said that I have very little respect for Lee Strobel and his failed attempts at labeling intelligent design as science. Intelligent Design is not science, it is a subjective belief which presupposes the truth. The purpose of science is to find the truth, but ID started by assuming the truth and therefor it can't be science. About the gospels I do not agree with Lee that you need less faith to believe the ressurection of Jesus than to not believe in it. There are just so many endless whats and ifs about the integrity of any section in the Bible and if you go to any other religion, like Islam, you will find they are using just the same arguments there and therefor it is impossible to know who is most correct or least inaccurate.

Do I believe that the people believing in religion are always irrational? No, ofcourse not. I simply think they do not know any better. This is why it is so important to educate people with proven facts and expose them to many different world-views to show that you can be spiritual and have good moral values without following the doctrines or politics of any given religion. I do not think we have a good definition of what spirituality really is, to me it is the belief in something greater than one self and not necessarily a devine being. And even though it might not look like it, I consider myself quite spiritual.

    Cheers!

    Fair enough!

I think the moral argument will be discussed in your other blog. As for Lee strobel…….ummm…I would agree that ID is not science! I believe science can be used to help sustain it, but a scientific theory it is not. I enjoyed Leo's treatment of the argument for the resurrection but I believe that Dr. William Lane Craig very brilliantly in his book "Assessing the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus". He studied the resurrection alone for many years under a New Testament historian in Germany. I do believe that you will eventually believe in God and then it will be my job to make you believe in the God of the Christians :)

The historical resurrection is a good argument, but it is weak by itself. In combination with other philosophical and historical arguments I not only find it reasonable to believe in Christianity, but quite compelling. But I'll have to wait until you are atleast a theist before I can attempt to use it

    :)

As an apologist, I found Lee Strobel's book "The case for a Creator" to be a HUGE let down.

However, it isn't the informer that matters, it is the information. And the information in the historical resurrection documentary he put on was a good starting point.

    Sincerely,

    Paul

P.S. When will your sight be up?
