Question: How do I change the story I have about my body and myself?
Answer #2: Detach from your Negative Thoughts
One of the primary ways that we prevent ourselves from experiencing the unlimited abundance that we are is through our thoughts. We have already covered some of the nasty negative body thoughts and stories that many people experience on an all-too-frequent basis. It is worth knowing what to do about these ugly thoughts when they arise on the screen of your awareness.
Once you learn how to disconnect and detach from them, they will have no power over you. They come; they go, just like clouds appearing in the sky, passing by, and dissolving into the ether from which they came. However, and this is a big however, if you identify with these thoughts, they have the power to make your life miserable and block you from the power of intention that is available to you in every moment.
Here are a few techniques for disconnecting from any negative beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. One of these techniques is not better than another. In fact, they are all useful for different people at different times and in different situations. My advice is to pick the technique that resonates with you and apply it to Negative Body Thoughts. See what happens. If they come back, which they often will, use something else. As you evolve, you will be able to pick whichever technique you need in each moment to vanquish any negative beliefs and reclaim your peace of mind and unshakeable well-being.
1. Drop it
2. Disagree with it
3. Ignore it
4. Dialogue with it
5. Destroy it
6. Embrace it
Technique #1: Drop It
That’s right – drop it. Just drop it. When you find yourself caught in a negative dialogue with your body, lamenting specific body parts, or your overall physical condition – just drop it. Remind yourself that your mind is merely thinking, creating a story, and you don’t need to listen to it. Remind yourself that who you are is inherently loveable, beautiful, and perfect, right now, in this moment. Drop the thought and move ahead with create a body and a life that you love, gently, with love, appreciation, and affection for the beauty that you are.
Technique #2: Disagree with It
Another helpful technique is to disagree with it. You can cancel out a negative thought with a contrary positive thought. The goal with this is not to force yourself to think positive thoughts, since that can often feel strained or difficult. It is to simply generate an opposite thought that will cancel out your negative thought and create freedom from all thought. For example, when you find yourself thinking a thought such as:
“I am way too fat” imagine a different thought, such as:
“My body is the perfect weight for this moment, considering all influences and factors. If I want to change my body, I can do that easily and effortlessly using the power of intention.”
Or,
“I am so old, no one will consider me beautiful” substitute:
“I am at the perfect phase in my development. My body is part of the natural rhythm and pulse of the universe and develops according to its wisdom. The only beauty worth having is the beauty that is within me.”
Or,
“My stomach, butt, arms, [insert body part] is way too flabby.”
“My body is absolutely perfect for this moment. My body is the result of choices I have made, the environment, genetics, and a host of other factors. The only way to change anything is through unconditional acceptance of the present moment.”
In this way, you can substitute Negative Body Thoughts that are keeping you trapped in suffering with more evolutionary thoughts that are going to help move you in the direction you want to go.
Remember always that who you are is beyond all thought, both positive and negative. The more you reside in this place of being, in this place beyond thought, the more freedom, bliss, joy, and love you will experience, regardless of your body, your mind, your environment, or anything else in the created world.
Technique #3: Ignore it
Sometimes you can just ignore it. The thought comes; then it goes all by itself. Practice not giving it any attention – don’t give it the time of day. When you can refrain from giving it attention, when you can ignore it, it will disappear on its own, effortlessly
