When the Buddha declared “All life is suffering” he wasn’t being nihilistic or negative. He was telling it like it is. I realize he actually said “Life is dukkha” in a version of Sanskrit, and that word is difficult to translate into English. I believe its aspects include impermanence and conditioned responses as well as suffering.
But that is only my surface understanding. I believe one has to devote many years and many tens of thousands of hours of meditation (at least) to actually grasp what he meant. And hopefully transcend suffering. I certainly have not done this. So as far as my understanding of these concepts I am indeed a “surface dweller.” One could say that about most people.
That being said, we all suffer. Even if we are not plagued by disease, broken hearts, and financial ruin. The “ten thousand natural shocks” that occur over time—egos battered and fractured, paradigms lost, endless suffering propelled by our fundamental attachments. Defensiveness is indeed a conditioned response. And in the end, we all lose people close to us. Impermanence indeed.
How do we change our responses to “dukkha?” The New Age movement would have us believe that we can “team up” with a benevolent universe and “attract” or “co-create” outcomes that will make us “happy.” Most of these intentions seem to be aimed at success in business, romantic relationships, and other material gains. "Abundance." Attachments indeed. Though certainly many have higher aspirations and want to attract or co-create their own spiritual awareness. This is laudable.
What is the method, the work, the disciplined practice that it takes to attract or co-create with the universe? It seems to be simply acknowledgement: “I am one with the consciousness of the universe. I will be in its “flow” and all in my life will be rewarded with positive outcomes.” Perhaps I will engender an “ageless body” and “change my genes.”
Yet, I have posed certain questions on this site regarding victims of rapists, pedophiles, the Holocaust, famine and earthquakes. Did they attract or co-create their own negative experiences? Did they get on the wrong side of the universe and its benevolent flow? Should we blame the victims for not “getting” how to control their environments? That is so childish a concept that it beggars the imagination. A judgment and a guilt trip. That is the inevitable conclusion if “attraction” and “co-creation” explain the “laws” of the consciousness that created the universe. A paradigm of existence must explain the good and bad, yin and yang.
It seems to be an issue of control: “We are part of a larger consciousness and ultimately through belief decide our own fate on this earth.” I wish this was the case. For that matter, I wish rainwater was beer. Sadly, we cannot control much of our lives. Through positive interactions with people, positive thought and positive action we can we can affect a good deal of what happens to us. Meditation can make us more spiritually aware. These things just make us decent human beings.
Yet, shit happens. People can perpetuate evil upon us. Famine can kill people through malnutrition, or weaken their immune systems to the point that disease takes an easy hold. Natural disasters can destroy us. Why? Job wondered—and received an answer that was beyond his comprehension: “I am that I am.” Remove the aspect of a personal god, and it dovetails nicely with “All life is suffering.” We are Job.

Permit me to reply from experience:
Deepak says: "Quantum Theory is a shift in consciousness that creates a shift in biology"
Am 64 years now and I had an experience when I was 34 (that was long before I had read any book of Deepak Chopra) that really created a shift in my consciousness and as a consequence in my biology.
I experienced something so extraordinary (never have experienced it afterwards) that there are no words to describe it.
I was left with a feeling of an overwhelming all encompassing unconditional love that nurtured me.
Naturally I walked on clouds during a couple of days.
Unfortunately I was too enthusiastic by telling it to other people and one cannot imagine what nasty remarks I received, for instance if I had been using drugs, or was I sleeping with every guy in town.
As far as I can now look at it it may very well have been that I have had a slight stroke. Lack of oxygen or something like that.
Enfin, after those nasty remarks I felt a huge pain in my breast and in my back. So I went to the doctor and told him that I was convinced it was fear and not a heart attack.
He was a wise man and let me talk about my experience and the way others had reacted on this.
In the end I found my own answer: Never ever let myself get hurt or indoctrinated by others anymore.
And I started from scratch, holding this little secret very close to my heart.
I encountered one creative experience after the other in the next 30 years.
And it still does not end.
I can truly say that that experience has changed my whole life for the good.
I really have been able to explore my infinite possibilities up till now and am grateful.
I am interested in everything and every theory that comes up about consciousness.
I believe we are just at the beginning of our journey about it.
It is an exciting time we live in, for every One
Heh Bob – yeah he did look a bit under the weather – those bags under the eyes are worse than mine. But lets not be bitchy – *god* knows i can be the queen of that without trying
We need openess. honesty , and lots of laughter to tide us over the ' not knowing ' or the stupidity or our own selves. We need imput from all sources as a ' humble ' hypothesis and not rigid dogma.
I personally am holding the view that cosmic intelligence holds / can hold/ does not hold all views including no view – every possible combination which makes none of them correct other than all of them being relatively true at some point in time and space. This is magnificent – not what is presently presenting but the concept of total potential states.
I am then more interested in the math of that – well the ones with the mathematical bent in the one mind — the ultimate cosmic calculation of all possible states, which seems to me as not being in the future or the past but as an every present potential which can be used or abused according to the individual capability and the correct conditions for it to present in matter and phenomena ( oh phewey – I sound like a chip off the old Chopra block – its that one mind in action thing !! )
That is some piece of awesome software we are looking at.. with an infinite set of options.
Chopra's intent ( lol ) is not clear – he takes Vedism and peddles it with a western twist and reaches a whole lot more people than any obscure but pure to the tradition guru in India .. Dr. Chopra has his relative place in the revealing or quest I am sure. There are now far more people starting to question, think and investigate than in the past when ( and I quote my own mother ) it was thought that ' if we were supposed to know the answer we would know it – so back to the sink and the kids. I horrified her and my father said I was mad but I carried on regardless of their overwhelming encouragement !
Oh Bob I hope i am not irritating you – these are suggestions for consideration only
Mieke,
I can see by your words that you've had a direct, profound spiritual existence. I believe in them mightily. They may be epiphanies–peak experiences–which are well-documented but not understood. And it has changed your spirittual outlook and the course of your life. That is indeed great.
I have had one experience in a somewhat similiar vein, although different in emphasis. The meditation exercises I've practiced for many years are practiced to employ health in the mind and body and to encourage energy flow in the body. After doing these intensively for several years I had an "electrical" occurence in my body that I can't explain. At the wake of my best friend's father my friend's sister grabbed my palms and confessed her father's abuse of her when she was a child. Instantly a current of what seemed to be electrical energy coursed through my entire body and literally pinned my feet to the floor. I couldn't move and didn't want to. It felt like a whole-body orgasm, as though I had ejaculated into my bloodstream. Yet I had no male sexual response (no "wood.") For the ten or fifteen seconds she held my hands I had no pain in my body from my damaged skeleton. I never wanted her to let go.
This has never happened to me again. Except once in a dream when I dreamed I was dead. And I was experiencing the same electrical "bliss."
Though not a spiritual epiphany, it was a strange occurence. But my meditations are geared more to longevity and moving energy. Certainly the mind and spirit benefit, but I have no interest in pursuing great spiritual awareness.
That being said it would be foolish to take individual experiences such as these and proclaim them as scientific proof. Science is far more rigorous and demands repeatable results under controlled conditions.
Bob
Hi Kay,
Then I must have been certainly an exception during my time
The home computer entered our house when my two children were 7 and 5.
I was housewife and I had to figure out that 'thing' if the children did not understand it or let it screw itself up
Anyway I managed and started to get interested in how games were made.
Before I knew it, a couple of years later I was a member of an English 3D computer club.
I have made all kinds of 3D Maze games about any subject you can imagine, from 'The Curse of Nefre a Thoad', 'The Jewels of Atlantis' up to a time travel trip to Mars.
We had great fun during those days, in the beginning of the nineties. The World Wide Web was not yet there and we sent each other our games still by snail mail.
We playtested each other's games, had a monthly magazine and we learnt so much from one another, not only in programming but also from each other's experiences which came back in the games we made.
Imagine, a simple housewife, programming games in 3D Virtual Reality.
I never thought I had it in me, but it came out nevertheless
Someone once told me: "When you have it in you, it has to come out, sooner or later.
Me am happy it has been sooner
Mieke
Kay,
I admire Deepak Chopra for his emphasis on a disciplined meditation practice. It is of great value. And he certainly has awakened many Westerners to Eastern spiritual practices. That is a great thing.
I haven't even read any Hindu or Vedic literature or commentaries. I don't know if this "attraction" or "co-creation" stuff originates there. From what I can see it doesn't arise from Buddhism or Taosim. Or the Judeo-Christian/Islamic texts.
Do you know? I'd like to find out.
Bob
Thanks for sharing your experiences with me Bob
Yes, science only accepts hard facts. But I am already so grateful for having encountered so many people from then on in my life that wanted to embark on such spiritual adventures.
I made them through my games. I remember I made one (science fiction) in the trend of Avatar.
Human soldiers had landed on a far away planet because of their spaceship not functioning well anymore.
They suffered from a lack of oxygen
but were very well sheltered and nurtures on that planet by some gentle race.
Lol, I have had so many nice reactions from merely men during those days because of the benign adventure I had made
Later on I have met so many people on the Internet with so many different views but they all were looking for the same: how to life your life as creatively as you could.
In the end I ended up on Deepak and Mallika's Intentblog and that experience once again boosted my creativity up to a few (spiritual) levels.
Now I have met a quantum physicist (DK Matai) who really is investigation quantum physics with his heart and mind.
Am learning from him up until this day and it is really amazing what quantum physics has come up with up till now.
Yet it still is only another step towards a unified scientific theory. We are only at the beginning.
It is simply great to exchange so many information on this Internet and always find the people you unconciously are looking for that will help you further along.
At least that is my experience up till this very minute.
Mieke
Bob thank you for the encouragement but in my heart of hearts I know that I still do not quite understand some things and I am still learning .. maybe next time round if there is one
As for the Wiccan thing, nowadays they are very into oriental teachings – at least they are in S A . I used to go on the wicca Mirc chat . There is one guy in Cape Town that totally blows me away with his knowledge and he is only early 30s now. Crowely, Gardiner and that bunch – OTO etc are not for me – I don't actually care for magickal ritual – even when that takes place under the auspices of the catholic church or Buddhism.. I have a real problem with invoking, banishing and all forms of ritual. Someone once asked me why and I said why would I invoke ( or banish ) myself .. it didn't go down too well haha.
The Pineal .. or is it the thalamus also .. .. anyway, yes the pineal as the moon would symbolically reflect the sun – it is the hare in the moon – and all those bunnies
whoah what soma ….
Yes when one understands ritual 's purpose – a focusing of intent then WILL becomes a very potent ' force' – the rocket fuel of mind – one doesn' t need ritual to switch it on when you just have to use it ?
As a mage/ magican ethically one would not use such force for self ( white magick ) – well that is my personal ethic. The cosmos is magic.. or is magic as yet unkown science . Sometimes I get a kick back from not too pure thoughts – that is like a dragon's tail whipping my ass !
Strange that Ed is the same age as yourself .. holy sh** you must both be so ancient in time that is
or ageless like Gyanama – this one mind with its multiple personalities gets very confusing hehe.
@ Mieke i have had something similar but didn't talk about it to anyone who was not interested in such phenomena and even then, not always and with a lot of reserve. .It isn't something that I want to analyze strangely enough or subject to possible ridicule so it remains rather hidden !
The experience could have been due to a chemical event or have any physical explanation- so I leave it as a question mark in my life.
@ Bob — well even if I can point to most / all traditions having a common source and that common source was not correct or only partially correct – what then …..that is why I refrain from writing.. it would be more of same old goobledegook
perhaps I am even more skeptical than you are.. What I do is really for self – and I pass it on for free in case anyone is interested – the generous side of me hehe
Well one has power over the people if you can peddle god or some unkown wisdom to the ignorant .. but then it is one's own fault if one prefers to sit in this kind of sleepy ignorance .
No one can penetrate what you think in your mind.. no one can take away your own faith even if it is against the law as in many countries.. The Buddhist or the Christian or whatever faith you practice cannot be lost as it is in your own mind – the only thing that is not happening is the outward display of it.. No one can stop you praying or meditating – it is invincible isn't it.. like bunny girls maybe it is better done in private haha
@ Bob have to be honest – not entirely sure i understand what co- creation means – can you put the gist of it here ?
Perhaps I may also reply to your question Bob?
DK Matai has done an intensive investigation in word and picture on both western and eastern knowledge about the very subject.
I am uploading those pictures and text on a page at a website called flickr.com and am learning a lot.
Here you receive lessons in history, science, art and relativity by word and picture.
It truly is amazing to me.
I haven't uploaded all the pictures yet but if you want to take a look here is the link:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/e8albumdkmatai/sets/…
Mieke
Thanks Kay,
It is already great to be able to talk about all this
"And it is true, no one can penetrate what you think in your mind.. no one can take away your own faith even if it is against the law as in many countries"
To me that is called the freedom of the heart
It made me as wide as all reality, open to new adventures all the time.
Most people at my age silently go their own way lol
Love from Mieke
Kay,
I think you have great knowledge and you should share it. But that's just my opinion. I know if you write a book it will be based not only on scholarship but direct experience. That's an invaluable contribution.
Regarding Wicca: I didn't think much of it. I'm not one for rituals–I am an iconoclast. I remember reading "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco. It is a fine novel and takes a wry look at metaphysics. In it Kabalah was discussed. I realize it's trendy now and embraced by many celebrities. It seemed to be very mystical and immensely complicated. I prefer simplicity in all things: concepts, writing, art and I would hope personal relationships. I practice Taoist internal energy arts but recoil at the complex hierarchy of gods and concepts that has arisen over the centuries since Lao Tsu (if he ever existed) wrote the Tao te Ching. Simple and profound. Even some of the energy exercises seem unnecessarily complex. One can get lost in them and start thinking too much. Personally, I am far more in sync with Diogenes than Taoism. Or Socrates. Let's have the courage to examine our own lives and everything in the universe. Straight out. Without any pretensions and without retreat into mystical mumbo-jumbo. Metaphysical metaphors are quickly becoming the "last refuge of scoundrels."
Socrates: "There is only one thing I know for sure, and that is that I know nothing"
But therefore it is so exciting for younger generations that they now can find all that kind of wisdom on the Internet.
It may also give them new insights for the future!
I believe that is the great advantage of the Internet.
And after the Internet comes the Innernet
And everyone interpretes the knowledge differently, so many new ideas can come forward from this.
Life is a creative adventure.
Mieke
Kay,
I don't think anyone really does understand the nebulous concept of co-creation. Apparently it's the notion that one can get in sync with a benevolent universe and create abundance in one's life. There seems to be no meditative tradition that propels this. Apparently one just believes it, gets in the "flow" and good things start happening. Believing it depends on how thick one's rose-colored spectacles are.
@ mieke
There are two ways to say " I know nothing " it is an enigmatic phrase ?
@ Bob you like simplicity. When my ex confronted me about writing a book ( he loves money you know and making the study profitable – where have I hear that before ) and without thinking I said how can I sell a blank page – does that make more sense ?
Lol Kay, I know nothing but I know the no thing
One has to create the causes and conditions for anything to materialize . One cannot grow seeds unless one ploughs the field and prepares the ground – then, with an on going attention and correct nourishment the seeds will usually grow. I am not interested in abundance or good things – abundance depends on scarcity and good things depend on bad things to exist. The one state changes into the other .
. If one wishes to become a Buddha mind then one must create the causes and conditions for the seed of the buddha mind to flower .. it wont miraculously happen without the effort
That is my take. so from one point of view one can use the infinite potential to manifest anything one desires but we cannot ( say ) manifest a superman on this earth without some very important DNA changes to the human form .. once the mind knows it can do this it it will most likely start to change the DNA slowly – we have to create the causes and conditions for a superman / mind to exist .
It doesn't just pie in the sky happen as far as I know… how can it ?
This may not be possible at this point in time though – maybe another time as we learn more and have the will to create a different world and a different humanity.
I don't identify with wanting abundance or this or that – just enough is good enough .Good things bad things – all same ..
Bob,
Would like to give you one example:
First scientists tell us that we must prepare for a great warming up of the earth (mainly due to our emission of greenhouse gases).
But now, now the 11 year cycle of the sunflames is on its lowest, they suddenly predict an Ice Age.
In the meantime scientists know that the temperature on Mars has increased by approx. 0,5 degrees in the same period as our earth has warmed up so they do see a correlation there too.
And it seems that Mars but also the Earth are wobbling a bit around their axes to that could be of influence too.
Now here is my vision on this co-creator thing:
Another possibility could be that we unconsciously are wobbling along real fine
In the end it may very well turn out that our enormous amount of greenhouse gases etc. will protect us from another ice age.
In other words, without us (directly) knowing we will have created an equilibrium as the co-creators
Coming straight from the heartphone
And that is why the white doggy in the video of Richard Dawkins knows the best
He never worries. He just takes life the way it is.
The road ahead is empty
I know
With miles of the unknown
Whatever seems to be your destination
Take life the way it is
Take life the way it comes
And cherish your dreams close to your heart because all the fairy tales predict they may come true
@ Mieke it is those very dreams and desires I am trying to get rid of not encourage – cause and effect – whatever becomes passes away
Mieke,
And if we do, it will be an entirely unconscious thing. From what I understand of the co-creation idea, we consiously work wih a benevolent universe to provide good outcomes. That is not the same thing at all as cited in your example. Unfortunately, both the co-creation idea and the "attraction" idea (which seems in the same vein) generally seem to be in the pursuit of "abundance." Material gain and perhaps enhanced personal relationships. I see a parallel with ancient traditons that used, and still use, spells and incantations to "bend" the universe to their will. Or perhaps influence people to achieve their ends. Aleister Crowley, once called the "wickedest man on earth" tried to bend the universe with spells, rituals and incantations both for enhanced spiritual knowledge and abundance. He died penniless, a hopeless morphine addict, sponging off people who were fascinated by his celebrity. Just an example.
Apparently ( from a Dzogchen practitioner ) Sting theory and Michio Kaku are more inline with buddhist / Dzogchen view than Nassim Haramein
Until I get the Dvd of Nassim Haramein I cannot comment on the differences
But isn't is annoying : the scientist disagree the philosophers disagree – all the views must either be wrong or equally valid or both.. this continual friction….

Buddhism and science
yes Kay, you are probably right
Am still having this enormous urge to keep learning and sharing with everyone around the world.
Am already doing this as long as the WWW exists.
One might also say: action – reaction – inspiration as far as I am concerned.
I never thought it possible that I would make poems in the English language just like that.
Am sharing them all for free with all my friends on the Internet because in one way or the other they all inspired me.
If this is cause and effect I still love it
Yes I understand what you mean.
But ever since I am on the WWW action and reaction to me always resulted in something creative.
I have done creative things with different groups spontaneously, nothing planned.
I also call that a form of co-creating
Now am making poems spontaneously in the English language, notthing planned but largely inspired by those interactions on the Internet.
I share them with all my international friends on the Internet.
I used to say: receive my inspiration from the Universe and give it back to the Universe
It seems the whole Internet has now become my Universe
I have read Michio Kaku's latest book and I have seen all the videos of Nassim on Google video.
They are both very inspired by their own theories.
Personally I think Michio is more grounded in reality than Nassim who likes to take you on his dream tour too
Every theory whether from a scientist, a philosopher or even a guru are written from their own perspective and experience in life.
That is why we live in a field of infinite possibilities. Every human has his/her own unique possibilities.
Anyway that is how I read those books and watch those videos and why I in the end know nothing than my own experience
Yes, this is a great way to bring the East and the West together
@ Meike this is where I lack.. my budget has been so tight that books and dvds have been on the wish list.
But I have saved enough to now order a couple of items – the Nassim set of Dvds and the Dalai Lama's book on The Universe in a single atom . both will take about three weeks to arrive so I will have to wait !
Yes I know if you want to get yourself properly informed you sometimes have to fork out a lot of money.
I have translated Harbhajan Sing's book Self Designed Universe into the Dutch language and transformed it into an E-book. I managed to publish it on a Dutch site that gives one the possibility to download it for free or to sell it as a hard copy.
Up till now 92 people have downloaded it for free. And I am able to download e-books for free as a counter-gift.
Am now typing Harb's book over in the English language to turn it into an E-book. He has given me full permission to do what I want with it.
Perhaps in the near future I may offer it to you for free
I enjoyed our conversations greatly.
Thanks and have great joy in reading and watching your book and dvd's in a couple of weeks
All the best from Mieke
Hi Bob,
Re-quoting you….
"From what I understand of the co-creation idea, we consciously work with a benevolent universe to provide good outcomes"– That is Science with a Capitol S…..
Just to leave this Open…………..if your interested…
Mary Baker Eddy had healed herself on her deathbed, and then was asked by a doctor if she could heal a patient, that he could not do anything more for..She did, and healed other patients at his request, and then he told her that she needed to write a book and reveal the Divine Scientific Principle that she understood and demonstrated.
She did just that, it took her 3 years to write that book, with subsequent years to make modifications- She devoted 40 years of her life to demonstrating the practice of Christian Science with numerous testimonys and proof of it's efficacy…..
There are numerous accounts of healings like this, held in archives in Boston- and in Christian Science Reading Rooms all over the world—Healing through Christian Science- not healing through faith,—
–Scientific healing through an understanding of the divine principle and the application of benevolent universal laws- In my own individual experiences and in the life of people I know, I can testify after many years of Practice to the Truth of this Divine Science–Still in Practice, still seeing it's healing effects in my own life and experiences—-
Here is an excerpt from Mrs Eddy about Christian Science in her address in Chicago…over 100 years ago-
"Science would have no conflict with life or common sense, if the sense were consistently sensible. Man's real life or existance is in harmony with Life and it's glorious phenomena. it upholds being and destroys the too common sense of it's opposites—-death, disease and sin. Christian Science is the everlasting Victor, and vanquishment is unknown to the Omnipresent Truth…Christian Science is my only ideal; and the individual and his ideal can never be severed…..
A side note Bob….
Understanding Christian Science and it's fruits, which are not placed in the added things, we namely call material, is my ideal…if the added things materiel come, that is OK, if they go that is OK too…as the fruits of Christian Science are not temporal, they are in fact the eternal fruits of Spirit and it's attributes, which it's attributes represent all that is infinite and harmonious…..
Kay is right, demonstration is better then words of inspiration, yet inspiring truth filled words that speak of our true divine nature, if heard, with those who have ears to hear, and claimed in being, are the preclude to healing and revealing the Ideal individual who's life is One with the all harmonious infinite God….
My mother when told of her terminal cancer, had a well intentioned friend who visited my mother often, but it wasn't all to long that my sister and I could see that she was enabling my mother with all her pity and constant stories of her own suffering was not what my mother needed to hear…..It was then I started speaking to my mother with a heart full of compassion about her true nature in God,,,,I would not entertain the sob stories as that would have enabled her healing……We can only empower by giving people the Truth of what they are really made of…..
Take care Bob….and know you True Self in God…Infinite Good….
Peace to All–
Gyanama

By the way what plugin do I need to access your previous link? Because my browser freezes.
Keep digging
@ mieke I have just applied for your google groups with DK..
so maybe I see you on there too
Meanwhile i have to be honest I have just had an explanation of Dzogchen philosophy that I will never never understand . Now I know that I am no intellectual but it left me in a vacuum of befuddlement hehe
I have no idea why your browser freezes .. do you have adobe reader installed ?Sometimes the browser can hang with pdf files if the connection times out
Hi Kay, that is great!
Yeah you probably will see me there once in a while.
Do not worry of not being an intellectual. I am neither
.
But you learn step by step through DK's wonderful guidance. We all did on the IntentBlog and the way he has compiled those beautiful pictures with text is simply divine.
He teaches you to really think, with your heart and mind
Love from Mieke
Yes, you are right, it had something to do with adobe reader, thanks
Can someone tell me what is the scientific evidence for this heart mind thing.. Buddhism uses the heart centre too ( hung ) and is the seat of compassion.. i admit that those emotions and feelings feel like they stem from that area of the body and back – probably a gland – thymus ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thymus
Nassim Haramein is the scientific and living evidence of this.
When you see and hear him talking you know what I mean
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=615169979…
Moreover, he now has a paper recognized in which he is able to prove it!
And now back to immersing myself in my book
Have a nice weekend all
Unfortunately Mr Nassim Haramein is referred to be more of the Scientology New Age persuasion which is not credited by Kagyu Dzogchen circles. . I am however of no opinion until i watch his set of Dvds but what little i have seen on utube and heard on the mp3 download I would say that for me he has some fine ideas which I can identify with . But not being a physics guru he appeals to me on the mind level than the math

I cannot download the plug in to see the graphics animated for some reason
