Lonliness Can Cause Inflammation

Research indicates that loneliness has a biological impact on our bodies and our genes. Past research established that the quality of a person’s social network has an effect on their health. Lonely people tend to suffer a higher mortality rate than those who are not lonely. This latest research may explain this finding.

UCLA researchers found that loneliness seems to affect the activity of genes that drive inflammation – causing more inflammation. They also found that loneliness seems to be responsible for an under-expression of certain genes that are involved in the antiviral response.

The bottom line of this and similar research is that loneliness can be harmful to our health, while strong social connections can be beneficial. Research has also shown that it isn’t necessarily the quantity of friends that matter as much as the quality.

Sometimes I get so caught up in my work that some of my relationships suffer. I find myself with little time to devote to my close friends. In light of this research, that could be detrimental to my health. I am ready to change this and put extra effort into my relationships. How about you? Are you paying enough attention to your important relationships? Do you set aside quality time for your close friends and family?

If you answered no to those questions, then start today and set aside time each week to visit with friends and enjoy their company. Remember that building your social network is not only fun, but it is good for your health and may help you live longer!
