Making Meditation Fun

I am one of the world’s worst meditators. However, I know that every single book about spirituality that I’ve read insists on the importance of meditation. I find I get more anxious the longer I sit trying to quiet my thoughts and watch my breath but I also understand the absolute value in doing it. I’ve discovered that having a regular practice absolutely helps my work as an intuitive. It adds clarity to my mind and heart and hence allows me to share even more accurate intuitive wisdom with my clients.

I believe that meditation connects you with the Divine. It allows the energy that is God to move through you, purifying you, releasing negativity and energizing you. I believe that this energy also contains the wisdom of intuition, and tapping into it allows you to find new inspiration and direction on life’s many paths.

Here are some ways I’ve found to make peace with meditation:

Give yourself permission to just sit for a short meditation. Many meditation teachers recommend a minimum of twenty minutes or more. However, I’ve found that beginning with the expectation of sitting for that amount of time can lead to failure.  Instead, tell yourself, “I will meditate for five minutes.” Have the intention of being still and being in the presence of God. More often than not, you may find you remain meditating for fifteen or twenty minutes. You may feel like you’re in a "no time" zone.

How do you "sit in the presence of God?" You just do. You sit. Quiet your mind as best you can and ask Divine wisdom to be present with you. It doesn’t matter how you see or understand God. You may imagine a beautiful angel, a whisper in your ear, a feeling of exhilaration or an inner knowing. Some people experience what they consider a messenger from God. They report feeling the presence of Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, Mary or other spiritual teacher or a more personal spirit guide. There is no right way to experience this. Your connection to the Divine wisdom is for you alone.

Also try listening to music. It can help you to focus. I have a portable CD player with headsets and I play uplifting and angelic music. This serves to almost always put me in a more open, altered state.

I have always wished that God or my guides would appear with great fanfare and announce "I am here. Here is the answer to all your questions!" However I have found that true inner promptings are subtle. They come as nudges and whispers and to my soul. That is why, despite my resistance, I find time to meditate. I find time to be still, go within and listen.
