Meditation for Self-knowledge

 Question:

I have been exploring way to "inner knowing the self"… I have done significant recovery around childhood trauma and am still recovering from a Dissociative Disorder.  The greatest challenge for me is to truly know my self, as this is often clouded.  I am considering meditation.  Your thoughts on this are deeply appreciated.

Answer:

For knowing your true self, I know of nothing better than starting a meditation.  A silent meditation practice will give you the experience of your core self that lies beyond your thoughts, feelings and mental conditioning. Finding your essential nature independent of your past pain and confusion is not only illuminating, but it is also helpful in continuing your healing process. When you discover your true self, you know that your real self can never be hurt, clouded, or traumatized and this provides the understanding and security from which you can let go of the pain  of the past.

Love,
Deepak

Thank you both for the reminder. For me, meditation is truly the most direct way of releasing notions of discontentment of life, of self and of the world. Which is not to make light of oppressions of the past, but to point out the 'weightlessness' of mind-matter that can be attained through a practice of quiet reflection. In these uncertain times, meditation is something you can bank on. Now if I could just stop procrastinating long enough to get back into a routine …

    Dear Deepak,

Even though I had a spontaneous mystical experience that got me in touch with my eternal essence at the age of 14, it was not until I took your Primordial Sound Meditation class 30 years later that I began to consciously reconnect to my true self on a regular basis. It has been an invaluable source of wisdom and peace.

I now live in Sedona, Arizona, and I have met your good friend here, Sarah McLean.

Bless you and the work you do!
