A Meditative Way To Appreciate Nature While Stuck On Your Computer: Live Video Streams of Hummingbirds

Last year, live streams of shiba inu puppies was all the rage. Cubicle workers in record numbers were switching between their work e-mail tabs and the browser tab that contained the live video stream of roly-poly shiba inu puppies sleeping, eating, playing, and simply looking so gosh darn I-just-want-to-punch-holes-in-walls cute.

And the winner for the newest big trend in live video streams of small animals? Hummingbirds.

Yes, hummingbirds. It must be a legitimate trend because The New Yorker says so. More than that, these small winged creatures–usually flitting by too fast to observe in great detail–are rather breathtaking to watch up-close and in breathtaking high definition. Watching the little bird stop at its nest to take a breather in real time is unexpectedly enthralling.

(If all you see in the live video feed is an empty nest–fear not. Check back again later and Hoku the hummingbird may be back.)

This is not such a bad way to kill time on the internet if you are stuck in front of the computer all day long. Rather than filling your head with empty celebrity gossip or getting sucked into the whirlpool of empty brain caolories that is your latest Facebook friend feed, tracking the activity of a hummingbird over the course of a day makes for a rather meditative and introspective experience.

Try it for yourself. Kind of helps you forget your mundane problems for a little bit, doesn’t it?
