It’s 2:30 in the afternoon. Suddenly, you envision your cubicle turning into your bedroom, much like Max’s room transforms in Where the Wild Things Are. You know you still have hours of work to do, and let’s face it, the boss tends to become annoyed when you short out the keyboard with drool. Fight off the afternoon doldrums and maintain your energy by following these simple tips.

S-T-R-E-T-C-H! A good number of us work at a desk for at least eight hours a day. You need to remember to MOVE occasionally to keep your blood flowing. There are a number of simple exercises you can do at your desk. WedMD recommends the following:
· Jumping Jacks for one minute.
· Shadow boxing for one minute.
· Run in place for one minute.
· Pump your arms over your head for 30 seconds, tap your feet quickly for 30 seconds
· Pretend to jump rope for a minute.
· Take the stairs, 2 at a time if you are able.

B-Complex Vitamins. There are a number of “B” vitamins, and all will help your energy levels in one way or another. For example, B1 aids memory and B5 strengthens the immune system. For a more complete analysis of what the different types of B vitamins do for your body, click here.

Boost Your Blood Sugar. Feeling lethargic in the afternoons is often a result in a drop in blood sugar. Make sure you choose a low-calorie, healthy snack like apples, bananas, yogurt, popcorn, red peppers and hummus, or a handful of nuts.

Change Your Socks! Keep an extra pair of socks at work and change them mid-day, especially if you’ve done a lot of walking. You’ll be surprised at how good this makes you feel! (Just don’t forget to bring a baggie or something to put the stinky ones in.)

Lavender Potpourri. Keep a bowl of lavender potpourri, a lavender candle, or another kind of product that contains lavender, as studies have shown that the scent increases your alertness level.
Stay Hydrated. Heating and air conditioning can make you feel sleepy. Try to choose water whenever possible over soft drinks or other beverages. Make your way to the water cooler and maybe catch up for a minute or two on the office gossip!
