Mind and Intellect are overrated

There are layers of existence that are often confused with core reality that we all are. These layers are the body, ego and mind complex and of course our intellect. To realise truly what we actually are, we have to dissolve these layers. Then the source- love becomes apparent.

While the body-mind-ego and the intellect play certain role in sustaining what we call life and human interactions on the planet, they are vital tools to express the core reality in different flavors, giving individuality and a sense of reality to each of our experiences. Mind and intellect help in deciding, memorizing and analyzing. All the wisdom and knowledge around us is due to the focussed mind and the intellect. The sole purpose of these two are to question nature and question everything until we reach to the most profound question as to who we are. Once there, we have to get rid of both mind and intellect to experience the reality, the answer.

In today’s world, most of us are still stuck at ego. Mind and intellect are highly overrated. Even for those who know that reality lies beyond these three, it becomes very easy to fall back to the world of Ego-Mind and Intellect.  How many of us know this subtle difference and could balance our profound quest with keeping up to the world? How many of us could really understand how unaware we are of this truth each moment?

Very true Garima – could not agree more with your thoughts. This concept is well explained in the principles of the "Koshas" in vedanta- When all of the layers such as theare peeled away what exists is only bliss or andamaya kosha and the self – according to some scholars even bliss is a kosha that must be crossed to find the true self.

THe ego is an essential component however for us to function and complete our so called purpose in the "world of form" – however it is only meant as a means of identification – in our worldly existence we have suppressed the real purpose of the ego and transformed it to suit our fickle minded aristocracies.

    Garima,

You have reminded me of this bible verse:

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal".

    (King James)

Without source – love – all is vain. Yet love is eternal and forever sees us as the perfect creation we are no matter how childish and far away, (unaware) we think we are from what Is, what was and what will always be.

When the identity becomes all inclusive we may find that we can freely be all that we are and have been and dance our perfect part in a perfect creation.

When the truth dawns everything has changed and yet everything is the same. It seems contradictory, intellectually, but when it happens to you it blows your "mind", your intellect — that's alpha and omega, eternal now.

Thanks Michael for sharing this comment so beautifully. I can relate to it word to word.

Thanks Venkatesh! for explaining it in details and adding more clarity to it. Mind and intellect play tricks to hide from us the reality. Ego being mere identification is inflated out of proportion by uncontrolled mind and hallucinated intellect. Even bliss is not the final end point. So many get stuck even there, dwelling in it for its pure essence.

Actually there are many different 'apparent' views on this, with regards to meditation. Deepak Chopra calls it 'slipping into the gap', Osho calls it 'no-mind' & Vipassana sees this as a process of purifying one's mind. The mind itself operates at so many levels- cacophony, thoughts, feelings, & when silenced, as the tool of the observer. Hence I use the term 'apparent'.

When we are in this plane, we have to use our mind.. no running away from that. But once we purify & silence it, the cacophony & needless chatter is eliminated, & the laser is available to focus on worthwhile, wholesome tasks.

Thanks Malikkhan for shedding more light on the subject. I personally think that we cannot get rid of ego, mind and intellect and we should not also because they are the initial tools required. Culturing the mind every moment is something that really helps. Starting to focus it and defocus it and controlling it rather than letting it control us and our senses etc is something that becomes important.

This is one reason saints used to move from place to place because constantly changing what mind gets stuck to (because it has the tendency to attach to things) also helps in a way.

As said by Rajesh, being aware of every moment is enough for bringing about change. Yeah we all are really very fortunate to be on a wonderful site like intent.com where we can remind each other every moment of such things and we can be aware.

actually ego is just one layer of the mind- one can transcend ego & yet be a slave of the mind. The mind's ultimate trick is attachment or aversion. that could be towards the ego or altruism.. doesnt matter. anything done without balance keeps one trapped either in the past or the future.

Thats why, as rightly said by Rajesh, being aware every moment is important- thats what all spiritual traditions say.. the only reality is the present moment. And in the experience of the present moment, there is no mind.. only the self.

    love

That is brilliant Malikkhan. You gave a clear voice to what I needed to point out. We are doing pretty good in expression business with just few words here.

    Peace
