There once was a time, as a passionate and naive (and soon to be drop out) film student that I completely revered Roman Polanski. I thought he was just brilliant. And then I found out he drugged a thirteen year old girl in the seventies and had sex with (raped) her and plead guilty and then fled to Europe, never to see a stitch of punishment for the atrocious act.
Granted, I still have the utmost respect for his films but I have absolutely no respect for anyone who takes advantage of children.
Today it has been announced that Roman Polanski will not be extradited from Switzerland for the case, with the courts citing that they are looking to grant the wishes of that thirteen year old girl, Samantha Geimer, some thirty odd years later. "I am satisfied with this decision and I hope that the district attorney will now close the case and get it over once and for all," Geimer told French radio Europe 1.
Over the years she has made her opinion very public, stating, "I am no longer a 13-year-old child. I have dealt with the difficulties of being a victim, have surmounted and surpassed them with one exception…Every time this case is brought to the attention of the court, great focus is made of me, my family, my mother and others. That attention is not pleasant to experience and is not worth maintaining over some irrelevant legal nicety, the continuation of the case."
As strong as she may be now, personally I think it’s outrageous he never had to serve a single sentence for his crime. At the same time, I can’t fathom how hard life must have been growing up being known as the girl Roman Polanski raped in Jack Nicholson’s hot tub and I’m sure she just wants to live in peace and forget about the whole thing. Unfortunately, if Polanski had just been a man (ha) and served his time, this would have been over long ago for the victim. Instead, she has had to endure decades of publicity, embarrassment and what I can only imagine disgust seeing over 138 entertainment industry big whigs come together to sign a petition "to help fix this terrible situation".
UMMM, the truly terrible situation is that a thirteen year old girl was raped by a freaking forty three year old man, you jackasses!
Another jackass who doesn’t seem to get that is Polanski’s wife, who had this to say: "It’s the end of a nightmare, above all for our two children… I could not imagine another outcome. Today, the Swiss authorities have realized the injustice of this affair."
On the one hand, of course I get she wants her husband exonerated from his crime. What’s funny to me is that she’d mention the well-being of her children. As a mother, not that I am one but, I feel you’d have a certain amount of sympathy for the child-victim of such a horrendous crime and would have some level of fear when putting your own children in the hands of someone with a background spotted with sexually assaulting children.
All 138 of those people on that petition as well as Mrs. Polanski are no better than Roman himself, dismissing a sexual crime against a minor is practically condoning it. Sure, he was a brilliant filmmaker but does that give him the right to trample upon the rights of others? Apparently. Apparently, Lindsay Lohan should be able to drive drunk through Malibu whenever she wants and Mel Gibson should be able to punch women in the face and Martha Stewart should pick back up with the insider trading game! Why not, right?! I mean, they’ve all given contributions to society! Hasn’t anyone seen Mean Girls?!
I wonder if Mrs. Polanski’s ever thought about what an unjust affair it would be if some man four times her child’s age drugged them, took pictures of them nude and then sexually abused them? How’s that for a nightmare, Mrs. Polanski? Hope you can sleep well knowing your husband is not one of the 6% of rapists that actually get jail time! Try not to think about the 17.7 million American women who have been raped!

Polanski was convicted of "unlawful sexual intercourse" – not rape.
Although he broke the law and his actions were despicable (this goes without saying), things are not as black and white as you seem to paint them.
Saying he did not see a stitch of punishment is not true. He served time in prison. Only when the total corruption of the media-pandering Judge Rittenband became apparent did he choose to flee the country… knowing true justice would take a back seat at the hands of a corrupt judge.
You should get more of the facts before you are so quick to judge and condemn others – including the 138 "jackasses" you have labeled as "rapists" for signing a petition.
While I understand your outrage about rape in general, here it is misdirected. Watch "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired" to see the many shades of gray that you have painted over with your simplistic, broad brush strokes of black and white.
I actually have seen the documentary and although I understand that he served a small amount of time, he still plead guilty and then fled the country to evade his actual punishment.
And having sex with someone under the age of 18 is statutory rape.
What a awesome 6 hour, thankyou to Dave and all the crew at Roudtuit Caravan park for all the work that went to running this event, well worth marking in the dairy for next year
