I loved to draw and color when I was a child. I had the package of 8 markers that was made up of rainbow colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple), plus black and brown. As far as I was concerned, that set of markers captured all colors. I could color anything and draw anything.
One year for Christmas, Santa gave me a set of 100 markers in a tin case. I was stunned! This set had colors my 6-year-old mind had not yet conceived: shades of green and blue, even flesh-colored shades. It was one of my most valued possessions, and I hid it under my bed for safety. I received just as much pleasure using the markers, as I did marveling at the delightful gradations as they sat in the case. Surely, I thought, these are all the colors in the world!
My love of color extended to clothes as well. Childhood and tween wardrobes displayed lots of color! Red was my favorite, yellow, too, but something changed over the last 20+ years.
Once, on a third date, I was asked if I was depressed. My date said I had worn all black to each rendezvous. That was the first time I realized:
- I owned a lot of black (in fact, half a closet full).
- I was not mindful of the color I was wearing.
- Color has the power to communicate a strong message to those around me.
My new mantra became:
Black is for newspapers, technicolor is for humans!
Now, at the age of 33, I’m getting back to where I used to be at age 6. Only now I know there are millions of colors, not just 100. I embrace color and seek new ways to use it to my advantage. The landscape God painted for us is full of color! Beauty is made up of light and color. Children know this intuitively. I have never heard a child say his or her favorite color was black (or white). Color moves people!
I am often tempted to still reach for black because of its perceived attributes, but then I remember….firetruck red may not be slimming, but it’s full of energy and life. Neon green might not be sexy, but it’s playful and fun! Daisy yellow may lack sophistication, but it brightens people’s days! Every now and then, I find that black is appropriate for an occasion, but it’s more the exception than the rule now. Color, in my book, is the new BLACK!

Go Sion…Color your world!
I too love color everywhere…
During the campaign I loved seeing Cindy McCain. She lit up the entire area. She was always wearing such gorgeous vivid colors. It was a stunning sight to see her. Colbolt blues, radiant reds, apple greens, and fabulous fuscias. She did colors justice…and they rewarded her.
I used to wear colors all over all the time…but of late, the last 5-6 years, I accent my usually black now, with a shot/shock of color.
I have found my comfort zone.
My sanctuary/home is done in vivid color accents everywhere…
Turquoise, yellow, red, green, bronze, silver, all shades. I am surrounded by total love and warmth of all the colors I love…and they love me back.
So yes, surround yourself with those colors you love…and they will love you back.
In peace and love,
Razz
Hooray!!!! Thats one of the things I love about Mexico….hardly anyone is afraid of color here! Our town has the most amazing colored houses…something I really miss when I go home to the States. It feeds my soul! Thank you for bringing this back into my consciousness, Seon!
