Obama and the Nobel Peace Prize

It seems to me that all the fervor and controversy surrounding President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize can be reduced simply to a matter of intention. According to the official press release from the Nobel website, in awarding this honor to President Obama, it was the committee’s intention to support his stated goals and progress thus far toward healing and reestablishing global peace efforts.

Thorbjoern Jagland, the chairman of the Nobel Committee had this to say to the Associated Press: "Some people say — and I understand it — ‘Isn’t it premature? Too early?’ Well, I’d say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now… It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us."

And Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who won the prize in 1984, said, "It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama’s message of hope."

In other words, this was the Nobel Committee’s way of creating a global Intent for peace and reconciliation. Isn’t that an Intent worthy of support?

About megglin

I am an aspiring writer, an aspiring Buddha, and an avid traveler. My hometown is Lexington, Kentucky, and after a brief year teaching English in Costa Rica, I'm back in the states. I turn 30 very soon and that freaks me out a bit... What else? I'm a big fan of quantum physics, politics, my three cats, sushi, and President Obama. And I joined Intent to remind me why and how I want to be a better person. Just visiting the site calms me and brings me to the present. Also, I think Deepak Chopra is the bees knees.
