One-Minute Hand Massage

Are your hands overstressed? Too much typing at work? Grab a partner and trade quick hand massages for a nice treat anytime. This technique can be done with oil, lotion, even some kind of scrub (salt, sugar, etc). If you prefer to keep it simple, do it dry.

Hold your partner’s hand by the wrist with the palm facing you. Ask your partner to let his/her hand and fingers go completely limp, like cooked spaghetti. The fingers should curl in toward the palm of the hand.

Start at the heel of the hand, near the wrist. Press one of your thumbs firmly into the skin/muscles and slide it up the center of the palm toward the base of the middle finger. This thumb stroke is only an inch or two in length. Then alternate and repeat the stroke with your other thumb.

Continue alternating short, upward thumb strokes – left, right, left, right. As you do the strokes, gradually travel in a heart-shaped pattern: up the middle of the palm, and down the sides. Repeat this pattern for about 30 seconds, and then do the other hand.

When you’ve done your part and it’s time to switch places, be patient. Let your partner rest and relax his or her hands for a little while before reciprocating.

About grace.wilson

For ten years, as head massage therapist and the Director of Spa Training for The Chopra Center for Well-Being, Grace was privileged to work with thousands of people from all over the world, including spiritual and political leaders, Hollywood celebrities, socialites, professional athletes, and, of course, regular people from all walks of life. She now has a small, private massage practice in Austin, Texas.

Her first book, Massage In Minutes: Simple Techniques for Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere, came from her desire to create something more user-friendly than the DIY massage books currently out there. The techniques in Massage In Minutes are simple to learn, easy to perform, feel great, and are incredibly effective. She reeducates readers that, if they have ten minutes and a little bit of floor space, they can give or receive a great massage. No special equipment is needed, no oils are involved, and everything is done through loose clothes.

"If massage is an art, Grace Wilson is certainly one of the many masters. I am delighted that the public at large now has the opportunity to benefit from her expertise." - Deepak Chopra, MD

Massage in Minutes is available on-line and in bookstores everywhere.
