Yesterday after the inauguration I was so inspired. My meditation included a prayer to be of greater service.
Within five minutes the phone rang. The man on the other end of the phone was calling to say he knew I had come into his life to mentor him. I met him when I bought a guitar stand to hold my guitar up in the air. This stand allows me to play without pain for the first time in five years.
The new student is a beautiful man who has chronic pain. His mentoring session was profound in the telephone call. He realized his "tagline" was a story he was living out, a belief system. When we identify our tagline or the subheading we think of as our lot in life, healing comes naturally. He went from tears to laughter over and over again, seeing how his beliefs were trapping him in suffering.
My own life was colored by chronic pain for 35 years. Doctors wanted to fuse my spine, told me I would become a quadriplegic if I didn’t allow them to perform surgery. They said I had the spine of an 80-year-old when I was 13. They told me, like so many others, I would never get better. This makes me laugh now, and I would love to mentor doctors.
Now at 53 I am so glad I never had surgery. I live an active contemplative life, walking, dancing, swimming. Even when pain is present, there is not much suffering anymore. Pain is a cue to return my attention to the softness and beauty of my true nature. Self inquiry softened my belief systems and released the conditioning that held me in pain. There are no explanations for the doctors, and this beautiful mystery of vibrant living inspires me to teach others what worked for me.
Mentoring is the highest honor I have ever known. I’ve never wooed people to school for wonder, but they keep coming. I see how my intention reaches beyond advertising. For sixteen years now this quiet service has sustained me and blessed me with incredible friends who began as students. I’d be honored to hear from you.
