Pessimism and the Art of Self Acceptance

Still working on the art of self-approval and self-love, like most of us? Here is an uplifting story about that.  Chantelle wrote up her personal experiences that involve pessimism, jail and ultimately her embracing the art of self-acceptance. This is great soul-food for many of us.

Margaret,

I have really enjoyed listening to you podcasts!  I really liked the one about complainers!  I am embarrassed to say I fit into this category without question, so it was really beneficial for me.  Through a series of bad decisions and a rough lifestyle, I have turned into a rather pessimistic person.  I loved how you talked about acceptance, it really struck a chord inside me.  Acceptance is an issue I have always struggled with because most of my life I have lived with my head in the clouds, wishing for "what could be."  Several years ago I read a AA story that stated "acceptance is the answer to all my problems," and I believe that is so true.  The most beautiful time in my life was 3 years ago while I was serving time in Salt Lake County jail.  At first it was such a frightening, fearful, and devastating time for me.  But over the months as my spirit began to return to me, life became so beautiful and peaceful, and I was very much "in acceptance" of everything  Life was so amazing–yes, even in jail!

After listening to your podcast, I have begun to make a conscious effort to return to that place of mind.  Each day I take time out to gripe!  Yep!  Ge all my griping out!  Some days it’s the deepest insecurities, the shame that underlies the feelings I have of low self-worth, but most days it’s just the everyday inconveniences of life; my boss doesn’t like me, my pants are too tight today, my boyfriend didn’t say or do the right thing … I could go on and on!  And trust me, some days I do!!!  And then, when I’m done complaining, I accept.  I open myself to just BE where I am right now.  This is my life — it is what it is.  And if my life can be beautiful in jail, then my life can be beautiful today.  Although I may not be my bosses favorite person, I am a good employee and so grateful to have a job.  I may be a little overweight, but I really am beautiful!  Sometimes my boyfriend may not say or do the right thing, but I know he loves me, and really, who says or does the "right" thing all the time anyway?

As I have been practicing acceptance, my gratitude is also growing.  I start to see that glimmer of beauty I once felt so strongly, and my spirit begins to feel joy.  Thank you so much for reminding me of this practice!  I look forward to hearing more from you!  Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom with me!
