Remember that old song with the line “pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again?” Jerome Kern wrote the song and many people, including Frank Sinatra sang it. If you are old enough you will remember it and if you are young and do not know this line, memorize it as it is a great helper in times of stress.
There is no point in hiding our feelings and pushing upsetting experiences under the rug, but we can also ruin our lives if we wallow in our problems. No matter what is happening, there is always something about each day that can be enjoyed. Especially during stressful times, we must take care of ourselves in a special way and do things that make us feel good.
What if we set a time limit for worry, and a time limit for being depressed? If we are worried, we can decide what actions we can take to help solve our problems and then we have to go on about our day. If we are depressed, we can do something to distract ourselves for awhile such as watching a funny movie.
Have you ever tried to help a friend who was upset, and no matter what you suggested your friends said “That will not work because…..” After awhile you get frustrated with your friend. What about our relationships to ourselves? Are we doing the same thing? Are we focusing more on what will not work that what WILL work?
If we want to walk the spiritual path, then wallowing around in our problems is simply not an option. We must accept that life brings very difficult problems to cope with, cope as well as we can and then get on with our lives.
We must sing that old song “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.”
