Pursuing Two Opposing Goals Often Leads to the Loss of Both

Each step of our journey leads us to new hopes and possibilities, but we all reach a series of crossroads where we are forced to choose one path or the other. You can’t be single and married. You can’t be child-free and a parent. You can’t throw all of your career energies into working for someone else and working for yourself. You can’t stay the same and grow into your full potential. If you try to somehow have both, you’ll usually end up with neither. As the Russian proverb goes: “If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.”

Making choices is often challenging because it poses a risk of making a decision that will be regretted later. On the other hand, not making a choice is itself a choice too. Time keeps passing and the journey keeps going, whether we consciously set our own course or not. Wise people throughout history urge us to boldly make choices for our own lives, because the power of choice is often more important than the choice itself:

  • “The strongest principle of growth lies in human choice.” - George Eliot
  • “Our greatest power is the power of choice; our greatest freedom lies in the exercise of our power of choice.” - William Curtis
  • “In the many thousand daily choices we make, we create ourselves and the voice with which we speak and work.” – Carolyn Forche
  • “Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.”- Robert F. Bennett
  • “The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.” – Flora Wittemore

May you courageously exercise your power of choice today!

The fundamental problem i have with "choices" is often the ego presents both "sides" and the vertical is completly underlooked. The choiceless state beyond ego is the crystal palace of the universal monarch with the vajra throne adorned with pearlesent lotuses standINg out. When you move into the areas beyond dualism there are no choices really, it is str8 ahead as Dom might say. Any detour is self destructive anyway, but regret should not be anything more than a reminder and a perking up to move foreward.

    dearest deb,

absolutely fantastic, when you are in a crossroad, think well, take your path and never regret, make the best out of it.

Wish you love, peace and happiness.

Dr.D..great post..I always tell people when they have a dilemna like the 2 rabbits no matter what choice you take is still the right choice..both may have different experiences but the results are the same..even if you come up with like you said "no rabbit" you still made an excellent choice..This is the path we all take but believe we miss out on something and really the missing out is good anyways because it is illusionary

I think it goes with an individuals ego that they feel they have made a choice of non-reward when all it is a space gap filler as in Zen, it is easier to walk around with no thought then to contemplate on your next move and just make it happen..I believe they will be more suprised that things happen better without plans of what crossroad to take…."Go ahead and bust a move.."

Thanks for your great comments about the power of choice Samuel, Trisha, and Soul Bro Dom! I think your comments all converge on the idea that the important thing is just to CHOOSE, with Samuel adding that we can eventually reach a place where the Divine can work through us and choice (along with karma) is no longer necessary. Fantastic!

Sending you positive energy today! :-)

    Peace and love,
