With gloomy economic news daily and the threat of job loss hanging over many of us, what does it mean for our individual and collective health?
There is a relationship between the state of the economy and the our own wellbeing. For the community a large, for every one percent rise in unemployment, statistics will show a 2 percent increase in mortality rates. On an individual level, the threat of job loss can be responsible for feelings of anxiety and depression.
There is an upside to these sobering statistics. During a recession, there are less people on the road, less traffic means less death & injury from road accidents. The building industry also experiences a slowdown – this means less accidents on building sites.
Stress can cause us to drink more alcohol, eat poorly, contribute to high blood pressure or heart problems and generally make us less healthy. So there are a few simple points we can keep in mind to keep an eye on out health and not let the economy affect our wellbeing……….EAT fresh food, load up on veggies, salads, fruit and low fat protein options such as grilled fish/meat. Take a WALK after each meal if you can, you’ll be amazed how it keeps your waistline in check and makes you feel good. Exercise improves your mood particularly if you do with a friend.Try and have 2-3 ALCOHOL FREE DAYS per week.
And make an appointment for a check-up with your favorite health care provider. That way you can make a plan to monitor your health and stay well.
