Right vs Left Brain

Dear Friends

The 81st image added to the "E8 Album" within the HQR initiative is the Right vs Left Brain!

The structure and functions of the mind suggest that the two different sides of the brain control two different “modes” of thinking. Each of us prefers one mode over the other. Experiments have shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking. The following illustrates the differences between left-brain and right-brain thinking:

Left Brain > < Right Brain;
Rational > < Holistic;
Logical > < Random;
Sequential > < Intuitive;
Analytical > < Synthesising;
Objective > < Subjective;
Looks at parts > < Looks at wholes.

Many of us have a distinct preference for one of the two styles of thinking. Some, however, are more whole-brained and equally adept at both modes. In general, schools and universities tend to favour left-brain modes of thinking, while downplaying the right-brain ones. Left-brain scholastic subjects focus on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy. Right-brained subjects, on the other hand, focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity.

Curriculum – In order to be more “whole-brained” in their orientation, the educational establishment needs to give equal weight to the arts, creativity, and the skills of imagination and synthesis alongside the more scientific and logical disciplines.

Instruction – To foster a more whole-brained life-enriching experience, educators could use more holistic instruction techniques that connect with both sides of the brain. For example, they could increase their students’ right-brain learning activities by incorporating more imagination, patterns, metaphors, analogies, role playing, visuals, and dynamic movement into their reading, calculation, and analytical activities!

Assessment – For a more accurate whole-brained evaluation of learning, educators must develop new forms of assessment that pay adequate attention to the encouragement, growth and progress of right-brained talents and skills.

    Well, Hello, DK!! We haven't spoken in quite some time! You must be one of the nicest fellows ever, I'm convinced!

    Right Brain, Left Brain…..you delve deeply into the complexities of this phenomenon…you even started a socratic dialogue about it! yet…..you fail to address a serious world wide phenomenon…No Brain!! you will find plenty of case studies if you will read the writings and listen to the ramblings of the American Left!! We even have 3 'no brainers' in high positions of authority….President, Speaker of the House, and Senate majority leader! Shall we start a socratic dialogue about this major problem that we face here in the US?

    Much love and peace and holiness and goodness and purity and loveliness and happiness and amazingness and joy and harmoniousness and all that fluff….to you sir!! Have a wunnerful week!!
