The Secret of Casseroles

For Mother’s Day my husband made me my favorite broccoli casserole for dinner along with the baked salmon with citrus reduction sauce and saffron rice followed by cheese cake.  As I began eating the broccoli casserole it triggered enormous tender memories of years past.

Jim’s mother gave me this broccoli casserole recipe.  As a new bride she stood patiently in her old kitchen and taught me how to work with each ingredient with the greatest respect and attention.  She would tell me stories of where she served this casserole through the years, the calamities of life that were healed when she served her famous broccoli casserole and how this recipe had become a holy meditation for her.

Margery is dead now, but her casserole, the stories and her presence live through Jim and me.  I closed my eyes at my first bite, sent her love to the other side, and promised to pass this piece of heavenly bliss on to others with the same reverent respect she intended.
