SELF Employment?

Like other business owners, my husband and I are subject to the stresses of today’s economy. It is easy to drop out of a healthy, calm state of mind into one that is filled with fear, worry and suffering. At such moments, I often remember a passage in a book about the philosophy and psychology of yoga.

In The Heart and Science of Yoga: A Blueprint for Peace, Happiness and Freedom from Fear, Leonard Perlmutter tells of a visit to his teacher, Eknath Easwaran. He explained to Easwaran that as a self-employed person without a regular paycheck, he sometimes found himself worrying about money rather than living in the power and presence of each moment. What could he do about that?

I loved Easwaran’s answer: "Your problem is this," he said, with a twinkle in his eye. "You consider yourself self-employed. I am employed by the Self."

Considering myself "employed by the Self" helps me relinquish the fear of failure and emboldens my positive intentions.

In today’s climate of un-employment and financial loss, it is more important than ever to not become attached to worries and concerns that can shrink our consciousness and cut us off from the larger Self, our Divine Source.

When we attune to the universal spirit of connection and love, we are doing the work of the Self, "employed by the Self," whether we get a paycheck or not.  If we live and act in service to the Self, we can rely on a continual flow of life energy, providing us always with peace, happiness and freedom from fear.
